A Perfect Circle Eat the Elephant

2018-02-05 by judasgoat | 117 Comments
A Perfect Circle have finally announced their new album, which is actually, seriously called Eat the Elephant. The album will be out on April 20th on BMG. Maynard James Keenan had this to say on the album:

"Although I’m extremely excited to finally be completing this album after a 14-year hiatus, I’m actually more excited that its intentional release date is serving a greater purpose. The 20th of April is Carina Round’s birthday. She is a dear friend who is extremely difficult to shop for. Pressure off. Of course, I must also note that the potheads are gonna be thrilled that this album comes out on 4-20. May it serve as a glorious soundtrack to accompany all of the giggling and vexing sounds of nibbling and snacking. Fingers crossed, Cheech & Chong will be proud."

Along with the announcement, A Perfect Circle are also premiering a new song, TalkTalk, which can be streamed here:

The cover art can be viewed here: http://consequenceofsound.files.wordpress.com/2018/02/eat-the-elephant-artwork.png

The album can be pre-ordered here, in a variety of options: http://store.aperfectcircle.com/collections/eat-the-elephant

Album title is weird, but that doesn't have to be a bad thing. The cover is absolutely terrible.

Song is ok but didn't do much for me, pretty repetitive and doesn't go anywhere. Don't have high hopes for the release anymore, but who knows.

Nothing wrong with that DungeonBoy.

I nearly listened to this new song before I realized I've heard like almost half this album already. I definitely want to save the rest for a very special 4/20. And is that a new version of By And Down on the tracklist? I'm surprised to see that track making the album (if that's the case) because that song is ooooold as hell.

Also wtf, such terrible artwork. Looks like some Puscifer shit or something.

So since he's been singing a lot about religion and politics is this like....

"Does anyone want to talk about the elephant in the room?" (religion/politics)

"Why talk about it when you can just devour it?"

Hence...."Eat the Elephant".

I kind of like the title, "Devour the Elephant" better.

artiswar

The elephant refers to the GOP. Hence the red and blue blood trickling from the bald dude's lips. He consumed the elephant and he's offering an alternative, a red and blue octopus. Something not so different but more evolved and versatile. That's what I got from it, haven't listened to the song.

'By and Down' was released a while ago for their live album at the Red Rocks. I wouldn't be surprised if they throw it in on the album as a more refined single. 'The Doomed' is still growing on me just like the other two singles. Mostly because I'm so used to their old stuff and partially because of the fact they're back. I'm not a huge fan of politics, so this album will be an interesting experience for me.

artiswar

I didn't like The Doomed at first but it settled on me in a big way. I hate politics as well but American politics is basically reality TV at this point, so it's kind of hard to get away from. And APC took a huge political bent with eMOTIVe... It's kind of weird, but also not surprising that this new record is continuing in that vein. I'm just glad that shit is not in Tool!

I agree, the singles all feel a little less than whole, but they aren't bad by any means. I simply hate the concept of hype. I don't like the idea of building impossible expectations. MJK fans did that for "10,000 Days" and regard it as the worst Tool album ever. I personally enjoyed "10,000 Days" and listen to it daily, but that serves as a cautionary tale for anyone who rides the hype train. People hype movies, TV shows, and albums to oblivion. Just look at how Star Wars turned out after years of constant hype. I just want a normally released album with normal expectations.

Its safe to say an album cover is meant to make a statement. Thirteenth Step is a great example of that. The cover became iconic and is easily recognized due to its obscure and intriguing presence. Lateralus captures the essence of Tool by combining their artistic and intellectual properties into an enigma of colors and illusions. Speaking of Alice in Chain's, Dirt offers the same general fascination with a vanishing figure taking the forefront. Sure the cover doesn't necessarily affect the music, but when you're trying to make a statement or sell an album to a vast number of people, the cover is the first thing they see. Metallica's Hardwired... to Self-Destruct is a good example of this premise. The album cover looked like a Foo Fighters record and didn't match the music or theme at all.

I'm still salty about the iffy album cover. The single covers for The Doomed and Disillusioned were both beautiful in their simplicity, I wish they had gone for one of those instead of trying and failing to craft an iconic image.
