Green Day will always be one of my favorite bands, even as their music changes. A lot of people out there think that the changes they have made have been nothing but detrimental to their classic sound. I agree, but only to an extent. If you listened to Green Day in the past for nothing but their signature punk sound, you will hate the new stuff beyond belief. But "21st Century Breakdown" is simply a step in the perfect direction referring to music. Their old stuff was a great listen, sure. But was it fantastic MUSIC? Or did it just sound really good? I think choice 2 is the real answer. With this album, those old punk roots are pretty much gone (with the exception of a few songs here and there), but Green Day has shown that they are more than just punks. They are very talented musicians. This album exhibits exactly that. It's not something that a closed-minded Green Day fan will like. But as a lover of music in general, this new material is definitely above-average. Some songs kind of suck in all honesty, but for the most part, Green Day is headed in the right direction and will continue to grow as a group for a while. |
