This is almost like a completely different band from their earlier stuff, more a mix of alternative and R&B here. I hear shades of modern day Radiohead in the beginning sections of "Hands Tied", then the song moves into something sounding like The Police? Ridiculous. Title track is a hazy, funky, chill longer piece that is very ambitious and works. Blown away by this after never really liking them.

Agreed on terriblekonrad's comment. She's milking the success of that album a bit. Remix album and then a deluxe? If we're going to go this route, the new songs on the deluxe better walk the talk and stand out and lead single "We're Good" just isn't on the same level and neither are the others.

Sometimes it's hard to critique albums that are doing nothing more than merely celebrating a past era/genre. This one is done well, but what personality of her own is really coming through the tracks? What new ideas are offered? I can't think of many examples. So the album gets high praise for copying an old musical period? At least Future Nostalgia felt like Dua Lipa's own creation. This could well have been any artist from the 70s/80s singing on these tracks.

Don't expect too much here. His work leading up to this has been spotty at best, with a lot of his standalone singles over the past year or so not making much of a splash. His work with ASAP Mob (especially Vol. 2) was also very hit-or-miss and no where near the quality of his first two studio albums. Rocky's fallen off the cliff a bit whether via a lack of passion in what he's doing or lack of content to rap about so it mostly comes off as stale. Despite this, there are some standouts mainly in the first half and the instrumentation has a very Yeezus feel to it which could work for some. AT.LONG.LAST will remain his best for now.

Oceans of Slumber The Banished Heart3.0
Just like their last release, Oceans of Slumber are adding in a lot of interesting elements and building a fairly strong foundation for their sound. It's in the execution of these ideas where they offer mixed results and once again there are a few songs that work and a few that clock in at overly-bloated run lengths but never really offer up any rewards along the way. It makes the entire listen a bit of a chore. Luckily, their sound is one that can appeal to fans of many genres (namely progressive-,doom-, and even some post-metal) so there is at least something to discover here for most. Recommended Songs: The Decay of Disregard, Etiolation, No Color No Light
Anna von Hausswolff Dead Magic3.0
SOB x RBE Gangin2.0
Loved their song "Paramedic!" off of the Black Panther soundtrack. Good beat, energetic lyrics and great dynamic between the members. This album tries to recapture that in 15 lesser songs following the exact same blueprint. By the second third of the album, the idea is beaten into the ground and comes off as try-hard. It says nothing new, it does nothing new.

Maroon 5 tries to emulate Drake? As expected, it's largely full of "misses". However, I always have a hard time slapping 1's on anything, there's typically at least one good song buried deep enough on any album. Here it's "Lips on You". But people seem to be neglecting the ambitious 11-minute funk/jazz jam to close the album out ("Closure"). It's been years since the band has tried anything this sprawling and well thought-out and it's most certainly NOT indicative of a band going through the motions like many on here would have you think. Grow some balls and give the WHOLE album a try, yeesh. Pistol out.

Like most of ABR's recent releases, this plays nicely all the way through. Some stuff sticks with you along the way, nothing really flat out blows...but the experience overall is quickly forgotten once it's done. "King of Sorrow" is the one exception, that song is a blast. This is perfect for music you can play in the background at the gym without needing to sing along. It's "lasting appeal" once outside that kind of scenario would be in question though. This shit sucks. I mean the band was barely tolerable before as it was. A very solid return to form from the lackluster album they came out with in 2014. However, it fails to match their landmark record Leviathan in terms of sheer fury and power while also not surpassing The Hunter in terms of their newer more mainstream approach as both those albums did what this does better. Recommended Songs: Show Yourself, Steambreather, Scorpion's Breath

OHHMS The Fool3.0
Pretty decent stoner metal with some progressive metal and sludge tendencies. Songs are long but paced well so they don't outstay their welcome. Music is fairly simple and standard for the genre, but some of the heavier sections jam very hard despite their simplicity. Was pleasantly surprised to see that the ~22 minute closer actually wasn't a bore, band pulls off a strong performance. The Bossk comparisons are a little incorrect, this is more Electric Wizard meets Anciients in my opinion, but definitely open to interpretation there.

This is really the sound of Sam Roberts getting a little too comfortable with the pop sound he's drenched his recent offerings in. It helps that it's nice and short (barring the snoozefest opener). The issue here isn't that it's a bad album, it's that it feels too much like TFN running through the motions. Every song, at its core, is structured much the same as each other. The sudden shifts in tempo and genre no longer feel fresh and exciting, they feel instead like something TFN puts into the song because "that's what they do". And in the end you have a product that feels more like attending a class of "How to Write a Twelve Foot Ninja Song 101" rather than the passionate and energetic album we know they can write. For this listener, the novelty has long worn off. Recommended Songs: Invincible, Point of You

While the instrumentation and vocals succeed in most respects, they never really encroach on any new territory for her. But what really brings the album down are the lyrics themselves, which feel more like a regression from "21" where it felt easier to buy into what she was singing about. Her lyrics four years later ironically seem to take a step back in maturity, making her seem more like a mid-20s drama queen who never grew out of her boy-crazy days rather than the powerful and emotionally-stable woman she is striving to be. The album is also incredibly top-heavy, with maybe a couple gems later on in the album amidst a ton a dreary, somber mediocrity along the way. Nothing ever really comes close to the impact of opener "Hello" either. Recommended Songs: Hello (of course...), I Miss You, River Lea

This is a special album. Without the backing of his old Oceansize comrades, I'll admit the album felt a bit...."lonely" at first. The music doesn't quite have the same impact and emotional weight as the latter band. But that's not the point here, Mike Vennart is letting his creativity run wild, and here he delivers quite a wide array of styles of rock with a surprising level of consistency. His voice is also equally as good as before and has arguably got even better with age, which is nuts. He has a very negative opinion of Facebook, which he claims is not "real" enough for him and often distracts women he is trying to hit on, taking time away from what he'd rather do with them. 2.) He does not like to assist in police investigations even when said investigation does not involve him even in the slightest. 3.) He has a lot of enemies. Like...a LOT.

Callisto Secret Youth2.5
I get it had been six years since their previous album. I get that they don't feel obligated to sound like their older selves. I get that they may even want to distance themselves from post-metal altogether (which this album definitely tries to do). But this heavier incorporation of alt-rock and almost complete doing away with harsh vocals has resulted in something that lacks impact. If you stack this against their earlier stuff it wilts quite fast. The band definitely has some work to do in order to make something big out of this newer direction.
Periphery Juggernaut: Omega4.5
The album Periphery always had in them, absolutely brilliant and single-handedly saves the entire Juggernaut double album from the inevitable mediocrity that Alpha would've left it in on its own. It's nice and concise and plays to all their strengths.

Arcane Known/Learned3.5
First half: A solid 4-4.5/5 and an astounding piece of prog rock. Second half: 2-2.5/5, the acoustic side comes off as boring and diluted and would've maybe suited a shorter EP but really drags down the far superior first half.

Deeply Sorry... was a fun debut release. You can tell the band were excited and while their music invoked moodier atmospheres in certain parts, it felt adventurous and exciting nonetheless. Then the band kind of just got...sad (for lack of a better word). Any Fool Can Regret Yesterday is the darkest and bleakest release yet for Baulta. Maybe their debut was the wrong first impression to get but to me this music isn't very fun anymore and hard to vibe with. As with any post-rock release, I'm sure there will be a certain group that gets something out of this, but I really miss their emotionally lighter material. This makes me want to cry and I have other bands that already do that for me...thank you VERY much.

Thousand Foot Krutch has been teetering on the edge between decent melodic hard rock and face-smacking awkward nu-metal for years. However, up until now they had somehow managed to elude the inevitable collapse that happens to bands like that by having each album deliver at least a few gems and a tolerable level of consistency. Oxygen:Inhale is the first time I can tell you that TFK has fallen off the wrong side of the wall and is lost in a place that only they understand. Let's hope Oxygen:Exhale redeems them.

I'm going to say about Pelican the same thing Paul Pierce said about the Toronto Raptors' disappointing 2015 playoff run: Pelican don't have the 'it' factor. They make mildly enjoyable instrumental post-metal that is by no means unlistenable but is also not in any way memorable.

A bit of a step down from Take Care. There are some strong songs here, but his sophomore release somehow felt tighter with very few chinks in its armor despite having 18 songs. Cult of Luna Vertikal4.5
This album shouldn't be as special to me as it is. But with Isis gone, and Neurosis delivering a simply "okay" album last year, I guess it's just nice to know someone out of these top tier post-metal bands can still be counted on. I knew this album would take patience (as do most of their albums). So I wasn't surprised to see that one day at work after several listens, I could put this album on and practically every song has that enormous presence and elegant flow I come to expect from Cult of Luna. It's stellar and so very worth the patience. Recommended Songs: I: The Weapon (the clusterfuck song on "Vertikal"), Synchronicity (go listen to this song a few times and tell me if that drumline and rhythm isn't stuck in your head for days after), In Awe Of (best riffs on the album, instant classic)

Izah's half (4.5/5): expertly paced and ferocious post metal from Izah as always. They balance the heavier
and ambient sections well and the final minute of the song is quite rewarding and spectacular. FWWU's half
(3.5/5):
not as impressive but still solid instrumental metal. Some of the spastic heavier sections stand out as
on "Bygones" but musically it's just outbeaten by Izah overall.

Sleigh Bells Reign of Terror2.5
There is something underwhelming about this album. At some point, I noticed that Sleigh Bells was using that same rapid thrashy drum injection in over 50% of the songs. Yes, it's a nice progression from their earlier subtle percussions, but it shouldn't reach the point of overkill. Reign of Terror succeeded by not being a re-hash of Treats. It did NOT succeed in leaving anywhere near as much of an impression as the 2010 effort. That felt fresh and alive. Here, only a few songs manage to do that, and the last 5 songs pass by like they're invisible. I miss the in-your-face Sleigh Bells I guess. If this album becomes popular, it will be nothing more than a short-lived fad and everyone will forget about Sleigh Bells for 2012. Recommended Songs: Crush, Comeback Kid

You knew it would be difficult to top Innocence & Instinct, but this album somehow stands it's ground. It's a grower. Red has definitely softened up enough to hit radio and generate some new fans, but some moments on here are some of the best of their career. It's just a mature and tight album from a band that knows it's strengths. I honestly got what I wanted, which was another song from them I can play 50+ times without tiring of it (in the form of "The Outside" - such an epic intro). They have to learn to end on a strong note though...none of this 5-minute long piano soft bullshit anymore. They finish every album like this, do something nuts for once geez! I don't think a single person who's heard of Kanye West (love him or hate him) can say that his heart wasn't 120% in this album. It's difficult for me to rate rap because the music to me is usually a short-lived fad. Kanye West has made something here that will be held as a benchmark for any future modern rap albums. It brings us back to the time when these artists were still emerging and dishing out those legendary historic albums we still hold in high-esteem. It's a celebration featuring countless artists and music styles here to support Kanye through his transition back into sanity. Recommended Songs: Gorgeous, POWER, So Appalled, Hell Of A Life

There are just so many different songs to enjoy in this album made by a super team of music artists including the singers from both Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stone Age. Them Crooked Vulture's sound is addicting, it sounds crisp and new while at the same time celebrating that old classic rock sound. The songs are cheeky and quirky with unexpected turns and twists in rhythm and riffs. There are also many highlights in the album, particularly the first 1.5 minutes of "Elephants" where the band breaks down into one of the most enjoyable lead-ins to a song I've ever heard. Each song is unique and the songs don't ever really blend much, so you truly see how flexible the band can be. A solid debut album. A little smoother and more melodic than the colossal sound that makes up their 2014 album Marching Through the Borderlines. It brings with it both more consistency but also less variety in tracks. Steven Wilson Insurgentes3.5
Steven Wilson's songwriting has always been stellar, and it's nice to see his solo work follows suit. Many of the songs here are actually beautifully sung and written. He has a knack for pacing his songs perfectly. But, here he falls victim to the same issues his recent work with Porcupine Tree had. The last three songs sound stale and boring, and his longer songs here struggle a bit too, just like The Incident did in spots. As side projects go though (often experimental and hit-or-miss), "Insurgentes" is a wonderful listen and it'll be interesting to see what he comes out with next. Lady Gaga The Fame2.5
Unfortunately, like most major pop releases, Lady Gaga may be fantastic for those first few listens, but this CD is, in the end, utterly forgettable. The slightly higher than than average mark is more due to the above average success she had on music charts and sales, because she undeniably topped 2009 sales and even had my ear for a good month before I came to this sad realization.
Skepticism Alloy3.5
Rise Against Appeal to Reason3.5
A more mainstream album from the band that has always produced the same level of music in all the years they've been together. I have the same goddamn opinion of this as I do with everything they make: solid, a good listen, but just not good enough to cross that line into epic. Sam Roberts Band Love at the End of the World3.0
Sam Roberts needs to learn that when you intend to have 12+ tracks on an album, you need to ensure listener's attention is kept the whole way through. "We Were Born..." did that, "Chemical City" was short and sweet, yet here he trudges along with a few bursts of speed scattered throughout, but trails off near the end. I also want to see him progress more for the next album, he is becoming stale and predictable even though his music maintains its gracefulness and hooks. Recommended Tracks: Love at the End of the World, Lions of the Kalahari, Sundance (one of his strongest to date).
Zodiak Sermons3.0
Cog Sharing Space2.0
Quite possibly one of the most disappointing albums I've ever listened to. It's not the worst album ever, but to follow up 2005's gorgeous Aussie rock anthem "The New Normal" with this is really depressing. Where is the energy, the blast of riffs that sound like fog horns signaling shit's about to go down? They even gave us mediocre proggier songs which seemed to be their strength from before and what I was expecting they would lean towards. I can't think of a standout song that will make want to listen to it again, but I also can't think of one I despised. Even the song "Silence is Violence" with it's corny repetitive chorus somehow feels less corny alongside song other songs here that attack governments in some weird attempt at revolution. Before they made their repetitive choruses and harmonies the hooks of the songs, literally begging you to sing a long. Here there's none of that. Iunno, will try it in the future again but I've given it enough tries to sink in already.

An album that, if you let it, unfolds itself to you little by little over time. Even the clearly inferior Disc 1 still consistently nails its mission of straighter-forward hardcore punk. But folks, it's the second disc where the band digs deep and unleashes a lethal power nobody thought possible in the realms of post-metal. Every song plays out like a nuclear bomb, quietly ticking away and building to a catastrophic explosion, each in its own unique way. This is what it's all about, the reason I listen to post-metal in the first place, for experiences like this.

Post-metal perfection. Each song is a journey. One is a more straight-forward journey (Define) that beautifully sets you up for the penultimate mountain summit. And the climb up to the top (Truth) is such a slow and satisfying build to one of the finest musical climaxes post-metal has ever produced.

Birds Of Tokyo Day One2.0
Birds of Tokyo have definitely improved from this mediocre crap. There are some great songs here, but you can definitely tell the band is in the experimenting stage. What drove me crazy was how annoying Ian Kenny gets when he repeats the same lines 10 times over like in "Violet" or "Get Out", just sounds effortless. The follow-up album a year later makes this album look almost disgraceful and negligible. Recommended Songs: Black Sheets, Minor War.
Irreversible Sins4.5
Seriously, one of the best post-metal albums to come out during its "heyday" in the mid-2000's. It showcases in various forms all the different sides of post-metal in one big wonderful mish-mash (heavy, atmospheric, acoustic, progressive, harsh/soft vocals), making it one of the most multi-faceted releases to ever come out of the genre. Must-listen and a great starting point for this type of music.

Shad When This Is Over3.0
Shad is definitely a threatening force in the modern rap scene. It's even more awesome that he's Canadian. Honestly, he starts out this album with some of the freshest and most easy-listening hip-hop I've heard in a while, but it trails out at the end and becomes a little too dull. "I Get Down" is bright and cheery and shows how confident Shad is. "I'll Never Understand" is on the opposite spectrum, one of the saddest songs I've ever sat through and so powerful. This time around, Sam Roberts starts the album off again with a bang, but it becomes much more mellow than his debut LP. The good thing is that he makes his softer songs felt a bit more and they end up being stronger than the softer songs on "We Were Born...". It's a quiet album, but very rewarding once it clicks. Still don't understand why his music is so catchy. Recommended Songs: Bridge to Nowhere, With A Bullet, The Bootleg Saint.

P.O.S.'s lesser-known crowning achievement that unfortunately was overshadowed by Never Better but marked the first time he truly fused the sounds of punk rock and electronic with rap in perfect fashion. The album glides by effortlessly with hit-after-hit and the ideal blend of anger, passion, and sensitivity in his delivery. Very few songs feel out of place, each unique and powerful enough to standout. This is the ideal starting point for the rock/metal fans who need a gateway into hip-hop. Pretty awkward on the first listen, but TFK's sound and cocky pump-up lyrics eventually sneak inside your head. The problem is at some points Trevor McNevan sounds likes he's impersonating a British person and failing miserably. An alright album with a few sparks of genius here and there. Gavin Hayes' voice is remarkably soothing. As a full album though, it contains a few chinks in its armor. It also reeks of pretentiousness, this band clearly thinks very highly of themselves (little 1-2 minute "Brushstrokes" all over the place...get over yourselves). It is very over-hyped in my opinion, but still worth a look. Recommended Songs: Same Ol' Road, Sanzen, Sorry But It's Over, Of The Room.

Not being a real fan of black metal, I used to look upon this album as an unreachable hurdle that I just assumed I would never understand the love for. Some powerful shit, and even those who cringe at black metal vocals like myself can find something to like here as those are kept to a tolerable level.

A very solid nu-metal album that's only real flaw is the sheer length of the record. On their own, almost every song is strong. However, when listening in full, my interest fades by track 11-12 due to the fact that the sound is similar in every track and the album becomes basically one 1.2 hr meshed song. It is still excellent and one of the stronger albums of its genre and era. Recommended Songs: Dig, -1, Nothing to Gein, (K)now F(orvever)

It's basically Dre coming back to address the haters after having been low-key for 7 years and saying: "Fuck y'all, Imma do me" in various different styles over 70 gorgeous minutes of top-tier beats. He may be historically one of the angriest, most chauvinistic assholes to ever grace hip-hop, but his talent as a producer is undisputable and on display here in dividends.

This is a rating I wish wasn't what it is. I get why the album is so highly praised. Really, they are the pioneers. But compared to the newer albums, this album didn't have highlights. Ahhhhhh, the album that could've been up there with my favorite albums of all time. It's flawless, literally gorgeous music and some of the best stuff RATM has ever written...for the first 75% of the album. The last few songs are depressingly average and a buzzkill. RATM had a slump with "Evil Empire", a very average album living in the shadow of its predecessor. "Battle of Los Angeles" kicks the living shit of that album as well. Swans Soundtracks for the Blind3.5
I have put myself through this album non-stop for three weeks. I listened to it at work, while I studied, even before I went to bed. It's intriguing, daring, and terrifying. But I can't possibly give it more than this rating. This double album strives to literally do everything. Unfortunately, such an eclectic mix of genres and ideas more often than not crumbles under its own weight. For every gem like "Helpless Child", there is a song like "I Was A Prisoner In Your Skull" or "Empathy" that goes literally no where over the course of its entirety. For every terrifying experience like "Her Mouth Is Filled With Honey", there is a pointless filler track like "Fan's Lament" that makes you wonder why the song exists. And then, there are songs so good they almost standout TOO much. "The Sound" could stand alongside some of the greatest musical achievements in history, it's that good. It's so good, I get impatient while listening to the first disc of the album because all I want is to just cut the crap and get to hear "The Sound" again. Soundtracks For The Blind is quite the musical achievement and Swans should be commended for what they've done here, but the harsh reality is that THIS style was not perfected until the group reformed in the late 2000's. Their later stuff makes this look like an unfinished idea and unrefined.

This gets a 3 simply because "The Saddest Day' is without a doubt one of the best songs in Converge's discography. As has been mentioned in other soundoffs, the other songs on here come off as mere leftovers compared to the opener. They mostly just sound unpolished and some a bit immature, something the band thankfully fixes in later records.
