Davy Mooney Astoriano | 4.0 |
I discovered Davy Mooney at Bar 55 in NYC's own Greenwich Village when my girlfriend and I were going out for drinks one Sunday evening. I had never visited the famous prohibition-era jazz bar, but the sound of some lively jazz from the street was all it took to draw us in. Once we got inside, we were treated to a wonderful performance from Mooney and his backing band, which lead me to purchase this CD. As far as guitar goes, Mooney is extremely subdued and refined in his playing; don't expect John McLaughlin here. However, he is able to create some extremely good jazz tunes over the course of this 11-track disc. The tracks range from lively and fun (Countdown) to slow and deliberate (Moon Song) to the majestically flowing (The Hills of Earth). There is no real weak spots on this disc, except for the fact that some of the songs can drag on for a bit too long. Overall, if you enjoy rather traditional jazz guitar playing in the vein of Wes Montgomery, I would recommend Astoriano.
