The Ascent of Everest How Lonely Sits the City3.5
The Ascent to Everest's music is stunning, containing elements of classical music in their post rock goodness. Beautiful violins and an atmosphere like no other, How Lonely Sits the City shows the world what the band could be, but some songs seem to drag on and on, which is a shame because everything else about How Lonely The City Sits is great.

Meshuggah obZen4.5
From the monster looking at you from the cover, to the appearance of the band, we know Meshuggah is a force to be wrenched with. The band's music provides pure evil in the form of crushing riffs and shredding screams. Truly a modern, technical metal masterpiece, and the most impressive work of Meshuggah.

The Mars Volta The Bedlam in Goliath2.5
There is no doubt in my mind that this is an improvement over amputechture, but not by much. Amputechture was a failure to put it simply, and far below anything they had done previously, only having a few shining lites. The Bedlam In Goliath has some of Mars Volta's best music in years, but fails due to some of the poorest delivery known to man. The album starts off with "Aberinkula", and although the music is frutiful and excellent, it just sounds so awkward and it feels like something is definitely missing. for every success like "Wax Simulacra" and "Goliath", there is at least one colossal failure, such as "Tourniquet Man" and "Aberinkula". Amputechture was a failure from the start, but the story of Bedlam of Goliath is much sadder, as much of the music on the album is some of the band's best stuff, with excellent riffs and good band performances, it's just that the structures are way too out of line and at times weak to keep the song together. In human anatomy terminology, Bedlam has the important organs, but just doesn't have the skeleton.

Divine Heresy Bleed the Fifth2.5
Fear Factory guitarist Dino left the band to create something new, but with Divine Heresy, he doesn't do that one bit. Divine Heresy's Bleed The Fifth pretty much sounds like Fear Factory mixed with Pantera, with a tad more technicality in the guitars and drums. Dino's guitars and Tim's drums are speedy and brutal, and work together excellently. But Tom's vocal work feels incredibly awkward in this situation, containing weak harsh vocals and some good cleans that don't fit the songs at all. Overall this is an attempt from Fear Factory guitarist Dino to make something creative, and he fails at that, but what he does is make some decent Groove Metal for the whole family.

Mr. Bungle California5.0
With Mr. Bungle, Micheal Patton achieves the maximum level of insanity that could possibly be attained by a person, and with Mr. Bungle's best album, Micheal Patton masters true musical insanity. Serj Tankian? totally pussy. Ozzy Osbourne? whimpy 5 year old with a stutter compared to the master of musical insanity of Micheal Patton. His music with Mr. Bungle contains several different parts and influences, ranging from pop to Death Metal. One I first heard of this, I thought no one with a brain would dare attempt such a stunt. But back then, I did not know that, if anyone could do it, it would be Mr. Bungle. The album starts out with Sweet Charity, which at first sounds melodic and simple, but by None Of Them Knew They Were Robots, we already start hearing death growls. The album is a mixture of all genres, and because Michael and his band are so talented, they managed to pull of the insanity while remaining incredibly musical and effective. One of the best albums ever made.

Falkenbach ...Magni Blandinn Ok Megintiri...3.5
Folk Metal outfit Falkenbach is the solo outfit for Vratyas Vakyas, and many would consider this among the man's best albums. The album feels like, well, a vikings trail onward through the blackening sea, as fellow vikings drift along. Rarely does this album drift off into a land called nowhere, but when it does, it does. Excellent work.

The Smashing Pumpkins Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness4.0
Mr. Bungle Disco Volante4.0
Mr. Bungle's least accessible effort, a truly avant grad album, providing Mr. Bungle's best overall band performance. The album, however, fails to match Mr. Bungle's first two efforts due to the lessening of the appearance of Michael Patton, Mr. Bungle's insanely fun frontman. His vocals are deeply missed throughout most of the album, and although the album is musically amazing and wild, it just isn't the same with more than half of the record without vocals. Mr. Bungle would learn from this mistake, and make a much more Patton oriented effort, and an overall better album, with California.

Nas' Illmatic is Hip Hop at it's very best. The pounding piano and bass heat up as Nas raps about teen life as a black ghetto child. This is really what hip-hop should always be, just plain and simple, instead over produced and ridiculously bloated like most hip hop is. Shame Nas couldn't continue this for too long.
