Initially I was unimpressed by the rough and wavering quality of Mangum's voice, and I would still agree that he hasn't the greatest singing voice. However, something made me come back and listen to it again and again, I began to listen to the lyrics and Mangum's voice didn't feel like a problem anymore; in fact it added more to the feel of the piece. All my previous criticisms were bypassed by the raw emotion and beautiful power of In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. This is an album that grows on you after many plays and to me is a true masterpiece.
