Alcest Les Chants de L'Aurore
Cynic Traced in Air
Darkflight Closure
Had to listen to this about 20 times before I could begin to wrap my mind around it. And
it still feels like I've only glimpsed a much greater landscape of emotions, so many of
which like determination, hope, and acceptance, I did not expect. It's going to take me
years before I fully grasp what happens to me when I listen to this, if I ever do. rI
honestly believed Perfectly Calm was the ultimate doom album, that no grander range of
emotion, with no greater soul splitting impact was possible. And Closure just blows that
away. Every aspect of the music, from the songwriting, to the instrumentation,
progressions, breaks, builds, vocals, lyrics, everything has improved but none so much
as the ability to produce a soundscape that conveys emotion that is concurrently clear
and vague, precise and imperceptible at the same time. rI'm listening to the title track
as I write this and even though I feel like I "get it", somehow I know I really don't.
And I will listen until I do.

Alcest Spiritual Instinct
This is incredible. A dozen listens in and not only am I not burning out on it, I'm loving it more with each spin. This thing is instrumentally packed but still breathes. It's powerful and aggressive, but still reflective and strikingly beautiful at times. Firmly rooted in their signature sound and style, but does just enough with introducing new song structures and sonic elements so as to be unique within their discography. And it's easily their most grand-sounding and epic-feeling album to date. Supremely listenable start to finish, I never have any desire to skip a single track or moment. Just amazing. I can't get enough of it.

Der Weg Einer Freiheit Stellar
Not sure where the complaints are coming from on this, I feel the opposite of all of them. The
short songs are nice, but they're in and out too quick. The longer songs have more room to breathe
and more time to build (and back-build), lending a greater impact and leaving a more lasting
impression (especially Eiswanderer). The vocals are great. Vicious and clear without being
overwhelming, they're present, toned down, and intensified at the right times and blend well with
the atmosphere created here (which is pleasantly subtle compared to the almost forced
atmospherics many bands are attempting these days).

At it's heart this is a very well written, extremely well executed album that brings an almost
perfect blend of quiet (eis)wandering, methodical instrumentation (with some fantastic base work
that's actually audible, somewhat of a rarity in bm), and blazing cold riffage that rips and tears
as much as it soars.

DVNE is back and better than ever.
Refining the fantastic soundscape and
atmospheric presence from their debut
LP, they somehow managed to shove
nearly an entire full length album's
worth of seething riffs, thrilling
drum fills, powerful vocals, engaging
song structures, and killer change ups
into a tightly packed, 17 minute,
emotionally striking tour de force. I
simply cannot wait to see what these
guys do next.

Gorgeous, unique soundscapes that are as
effective at conjuring images
of speeding across the cosmos as they
are at letting your mind wander
to anywhere from the farthest stars to
an empty abyss and everything
in between. rCleverly employed cleans
accent a very light and airy
feeling carried by most tracks, and the
fantastic guitar work becomes
the focus pulling along a nearly perfect
medly of coalescing bass, piano and
drums. Seething with genuine atmosphere
and brimming with hope and
passion, this album provides a journey
seldom travled and, even more
uncommonly, appreciated.

How? How does this man do it? At least 4
different projects going on at once
(that I know of, Sadness, Trha, Life,
and this) plus he's in some other band
now (Barbelith) plus the splits and
collabs. And yet somehow, the guy can't
miss. All of his material across all of
his projects is at least decent, none of
it is straight up @$$, most of it is
great/excellent and some of it, like
this, is incredible, truly special. This
is like a more methodical and heavier
Sadness, but with an uplifting overtone,
sick tempo changeups, and, as usual, a
crap ton of emotion that really
translates packed in. I'm in love all
over again.

Lunarsea Route Code Selector
Lunarsea Hundred Light Years
Following a logical and fervent progression from their previous work, Lunarsea hit the melodic nail on the death metal head, and infuse some truly well executed black metal madness for good measure. The songs are as technical as they are fluid and combine a seemingly endless supply of complex and inventive riffs, precise and emotive solos, delightful spacey breaks (most often perfectly timed), powerful harsh and uplifting clean vocals, and punishing blasts of rage with poise and tenacity. Modern melodeath simply does not get any better than this.
Lunarsea Earthling/Terrestre
Lunarsea do it again. Possibly the most criminally underrated/underappreciated melodeath band in history. Taking all the best elements from their last two offerings, smoothing things out, and tightening things up. Increased technicality, improved songwriting, killer riffs, interesting song structures. Only issue here is that there isn't a clear standout utterly perfect track like Ianus or Subspace Transition. But overall probably their most solid, consistent, and highest quality offering to date.

Mesarthim Ghost Condensate
Moonsorrow Verisäkeet
Nahemah The Second Philosophy
Ne Obliviscaris Citadel
**Insert extremely biased and gigantically fanboyish spoogefest here**rrSeriously though, there isn't anything remotely objective I can say about this band, or this ralbum. Like the grandest of Blackwater Park obsessed metalheads that worship Opeth and think reverything Mikael does is gold, I am completely and utterly enamored with Neo, to the point where rany imperfections that may exist, just like they might in ANY work of art, are lost to me. All I see is beauty, all I feel is passion, all I hear is everything I want to hear from the music that rI love. I could throw a thousand million adjectives at this and never do my feelings for it rjustice. So I will end this mostly pointless rant with thank you Neo. Thank you for everything.
Nhor Within the Darkness Between the Starlight
This will surround you with an enveloping atmosphere that is both powerful and unique, and prove
as smothering at is is freeing and fulfilling. Featuring a vast array of moods and emotions that
change gradually over the course of the album, culminating in an absolutely massive and visionary
final 10 or so minutes, this is atmospheric metal executed to perfection. As if that weren't
enough, some truly inspired and incredibly vicious riffs backed by simple but effective drumming
and bass work, both of which slowly gaining more and more of your focus as the albums progresses,
serve to hold your attention even if the projected mood isn't quite grabbing you.

Throw in some pretty bone chilling vocals, a variety of styles and song structures (though nothing
very far outside the realm of bm) and you have one of the most intricate, compelling, and
emotional black metal albums in years. A true masterpiece, the only thing keeping this from
classic status is that it sticks a little to closely to genre conventions and it's reluctance to
step outside itself even just a little, to reach for some true originality causes the only
disappointment I can think of with this.
Still, in time and with enough listens, I may prove myself wrong. My AOTY for 2013. Can't wait to
see what this artist creates next.

What really sells me on this is how atmospheric it is, without relying on synths or
incredibly long tracks. Much like Gorgut's brilliant Colored Sands, it achieves a
striking presence simply through the tenacity of its instrumentation, the intelligence
of it's song writing, and a penchant for creating sounds, mostly with the guitars, that
are just a little bit different than anything you've heard before. The punky elements
add a bit of dare I say fun to an otherwise dark and smothering sound, and some of
the post-metal tones feel like they should be out of place, but aren't at all. Eris is a
shining example of a band that knows itself really well and wants you to take time to
get to know them.

Band finally became what they needed to from day 1: concise. The shortened songs
markedly increase the impact of...well everything. The vocals ring truer, the riffs are
tighter and smarter, but still fluid and progressive. Drums are more interesting, bass
is more prevalent, and the songwriting and the structure of the album as a whole creates
a smooth cohesive package with great replay value and solid longevity. A strong
improvement all around. Love this band.

Killer release. An inspiring cross-section
of this artist's entire discog, cutting
the fat and leaving almost nothing but the
very best aspects of his signature style
and approach to spacey dance-bm. Not as
face-meltingly rip-roaring as Ghost
Condensate (his best work IMO) but
staunchly better than everything after it.

Edit: Arrival, Pt. 5 might be the single

Big step up from their debut. Mean
riffs, meaner vocals, a truly
sinister vibe, and
pretty solid songwriting with a few
flashes of something special. Very
samey, and hardly
original, but the talent and the
passion is there. If these fierce
fem fatales ever
decide to step outside their comfort
zone it could be really bad or
really amazing. They
give us a little taste of that with
the bonus track and the results are
promising. I for
one will be sticking around to see
what happens next.

Edit: Had to bump this up. Can't get

tasty riffs but they leaned into a more

Vocals are mostly the same as before but

the production job here is their best
yet. A solid closer to their trilogy.

VERY different for Darkflight, but actually still really good. I'm impressed that they were able to change up their sound this much and still make it work.rLots of (good) clean vocals, piano, softer tones, shorter songs, and a strong melodic focus. Still has that signature Darkflight riff tone that sounds like the guitars are crying in pain in a deeply emotionally satisfying way. Excited to see where this new sound goes.

While still very good overall, it's definitely a step down from "Below". Without the
incredibly intriguing song structures and spectacular passion of their previous album, or
the crushing atmosphere and massive riffs of their debut, what's left is solid
songwriting, a great vocal performance, and a retread of material they've done before and
done better.rMy hope is that they will take more chances with changing up their core
sound next time around, as that might be the only thing that keeps one of my favorite
bands from sinking into mediocrity as quickly as they rose to the pinnacle of their
original inventive brand of metal music that is Tovarischam. Time will tell.

Have to agree with the other Soundoffs here. Some really great ideas and good deal of passion behind them but falls nearly flat on the execution. rFirst two tracks are amazing, but then the next two starkly demonstrate why the vocals and production just don't work here. Guy tries to sing like he has a better voice than he does, and the screams, while pretty solid, and mushed into the instrumentation in a very unsatisfying way. Said instrumentation is solid but perhaps a little too spastic and disparate (i.e. the band sounds like they are not meshing all that well most of the time). A valiant effort but they need to pick and chose sonic elements more carefully, and do something with their production that's?not this.

Technical wizardry in spades but not much else. Songwriting is not terribly engaging and it just gets tiresome after a while. Still pretty good overall.
Buried Realm Embodiment of the Divine
Pretty much the same as the first album. Songwriting improved slightly and it being a little shorter helps but it's still kind of lifeless and somewhat uninteresting. Latest album (Spectral Light) is their best yet, mostly because they shortened the average track length and tightened up the songwriting so everything hits harder.

I mostly agree with Pika, it's just too all over the place. Sounds less "new and spontaneous" and more like they're trying to find a logical progression from their last three albums and they're just not quite sure what to do with their sound at this point. That being said, some of the heavier parts and odd change-ups do work rather well and I find this about as enjoyable as their last three. I'm probably in the minority finding their debut to be their best work still. The raw, stripped down, genuinely emotional approach presented there, along with what I consider to be their most engaging songwriting considering the track lengths hasn't been topped (though Rotten Wood came close). They started down a different path with Shore and imo just haven't managed to nail things down since then (Patterns was close). I feel like if they took the best elements from Hail Wind/Rotten Wood and Patterns they would have the perfect album.

Kinda wonky, and mixed a bit too high pitched, but it'll get your blood pumping, and the symphonic elements are actually quite well done. Songwriting is rather stagnant but they keep the tracks brief and the pace quick. Not the strongest full-length debut but there's solid potential here.

Slice the Cake Odyssey to the West
Honestly wish I understood what everyone is on about with this. But this cake has about 9 too many layers and none of them are particularly tasty. Lots of intricate writing that goes nowhere, and an overabundance of aggression that gets tiresome quickly. Like I said, wish I could get it but it's just not there for me :

Violet Cold Empire of Love
Do I want politics shoved into my face
like this with music? No, I really
don't.rIs Violet Cold an extremely
talented artist who makes awesome
metal? Yes, he really is.rDefinitely
better that Noir Kid.

Edit: few more listens, this is
actually pretty boring.
Violet Cold Səni Uzaq Kainatlarda Axtarıram
It's like he's just not quite sure
what to do with his sound at this
point. It's always been unique and
special, but he pretty much perfected
the harder side with Anomie, and the
softer side (and blending the two)
with the Sommermorgen trilogy.rThen he
tried experimenting too hard with Noir
Kid and Empire, and now he's back to
something along the lines of Magic
Night. So it's not bad by any means
but he's regressing.

Wanted to like this more than I did. Solid atmosphere and some pretty cool drumming, but the riffs and the song structures are dull and all sound the same, which makes this drag hard. Valiant attempt at a unique vocal performance but it falls short, and the lyrics (which are actually somewhat intelligible) are a bunch of self-indulgent preachy, finger-pointing nonsense. Normally I don't care about lyrics but because the guy was going for "desperate cries" but instead ended up with "whiny wailing", they stood out (to the album's detriment). 2.2/5

I want to like this. I really do. But seriously, wth are these guys on about? Their debut
was genius, beautiful and meloncholy and melodic and painful and soaring and...this is just
some weird floaty atmospheric melo-death conglomeration of poorly paced and strangely
structured songs that pools into well, a mess. So sad these guys turned out this way. Maybe
someday they'll find their true sound. I sure hope this isn't it.
