On the surface this is excellent black metal, but dig a little deeper and it's a horrifying
symphony of dread and misery. Riffs repeat for interminably long stretches, mournful laments
turn into cosmic horror, the vocals are frightening howls. It's genuinely beautiful at times
and hideous in others. Like death itself, it can manifest in poetic sorrow or an animalistic
fight or flight fear response. |

| This album has a lot of things going for it. The artwork, the riffs, the drums, the technical flair, the Morrisound-esque brutal tone. The glaring flaws to me are the vocals and guitar solos, which are so dry and loud in the mix that they bury some badass riffs. This album calls for Sepultura or Demolition Hammer style vocals but instead we have dying yelps. Not cool ones like in Gorguts either. |

| The runt of the litter when it comes to Slayer's discog, but in hindsight pretty admirable. Songs built on bounce riffs have aged hilariously badly, but their attempts to incorporate elements of hardcore and death metal makes sense given the time period and how Metallica and Megadeth debased themselves chasing pop rock fame. |

| It's a shame the samples run so long because musically this is pretty solid Devourment/Mortician worship. It's fitting that a particular track became their signature song, considering the animalistic snorts and stomping riffs. Doesn't sound half bad either. Sanguisugabogg would refine this sound in the 2020s, but credit where credit's due. |

| There's a solid 35 minutes or so of music here, the boys going for a more thrashy sound this time. It's just encased in 20 minutes of filler which turns an exciting experience into a slog. They couldn't save the leftovers for the next album? |

| Listening from the perspective of a live band, this is pretty entertaining. The first track is a pretty good Bolt Thrower pastiche, the second has a nu metal bounce riff. The Heidrun "who's the goat" refrain is the corniest thing imaginable but she is, in fact, the goat. You can't deny that.rIt's a bit too eager to please with all the ear candy melodeathisms and gym riffs but if you're in a good mood, it's nice that there's a death metal party album from a band that can conceivably draw a crowd to have a good time. |

| There's a bunch of things going for this album and a bunch of things holding it back. On the riff front, there's some of the finest in their career. Whole gang is up to snuff. The problem lies with both the fizzy production and the songwriting. Riffs that should be verse riffs are instead repeated ad infinitum sans accompaniment, while more melodic riffs compete with the vocals for attention. Baffling choices that suggest burnout, which comes across in the recording and adds to the fatigue. |

| Not a great album but not a stinker either. I actually like how the production sounds more scrapyard than sleek and I think the post-punk style songs suit Burton's clean vocals. The problem is that the album is a bit of an aimless slog bookended by some killer death metal songs. Two covers in a row is insane. |

| This is a death metal album in disguise lol. It's kind of fascinating to listen to in the context of bands like Entombed and Carcass going more "rock and roll" in the 90s. As far as death metal bands trying to "sound like real music", I think this attempt was so successful they basically erased their roots (see their previous band lol). |
