The growth in their sound is very apparent. Both Croft and Sim have expanded their talents, vocal deliveries being more dynamic and, in Sim's case especially, more melodically passionate than ever before. The skeletal guitar riffs remain, as does the stately bass, but they are backed by some incredibly specific and spacious sound design by Smith. Sure, you can complain about the future garage beats being lifted from what's very "now" in London at the moment, but being in the "now" of London has always been a part of The xx's sound. It's just what they are. I'm enjoying it a lot.
