Some songs like After Midnight are rather good, but I'll admit myself disappointed as a fan of the band. Tom brought too much of his over wrought grandeur in from Angels and Airwaves where it ought to stay. I'm all for growing and pushing boundaries, but change for the sake of change is unnecessary. Lots of blinks charm was rooted in their simplistic, catchy instrumentalism and entertaining lyricism. Their post break-up on-stage demeanor suggests they can still be the same catchy punk band with teenage antics, but this reunion album lacks its own proof of that. Admittedly the band has had some dark years of late and perhaps it was only natural that the music bore the vacuous soundscapes or search for greater meaning, but it would be nice to see the band get back to their roots. Growing up isn't all about being mature and boring or having every aspect of your music echo in outer space, but it's going to take some serious self restraint on Tom's part and a more intimate recording process on the whole.
