| Mastodon manages to maintain their identity of sludge metal while improving their song structure and experimenting (largely) with progressive metal, which creates an interesting atmosphere. Considering the intensity of some of their songs on the album (especially on the title track 'Crack The Skye') It really creates a darkened mood. Despite all the positives, it still falls just short of Leviathan in terms of production and Brann's drumming is slightly more predictable on this album. Although there's minor flaws, this is a must-have for any Mastodon fan. |
