The War On Drugs Lost in the Dream
I can't remember the moment I realised Lost In The Dream was worth buying. I can't remember what made me listen beyond that first try, filled with so many niceties but so few immediate standouts. To be honest, I'm still not entirely sure what makes this click so wonderfully for me, but... it just does. The dream-like reverb, Adam Granduciel's calming vocals, heartland/psych rock guitars and the overwhelming bittersweet aura this gives out are all very well, but there's something very unsuspecting about how this gets into your head. For 10 tracks, each averaging around 6 minutes, there's not a huge amount of variation within each one - yet, the replay value is outstanding. Through an almost subconscious process, this has wormed its way into my affections, making my head feel free and every glint of light feel like summer - and for that reason, after only two-and-a-half years I'm convinced I will love this forever.

Occasionally overlong, but nicely constructed and a beautiful listen, especially when they tone it down a bit. Vocals are sometimes a bit strange but once gotten used to really complement the music.

BUCK-TICK Yume Miru Uchuu
The bookends of Yume Miru Uchuu highlight perfectly what makes Buck-Tick's 18th LP such a fantastic listen. Opener 'Elise no Tame ni' makes a statement with a boisterous, infectious hook right off the bat and an equally catchy chorus, while 'Yume Miru Uchuu' at the other end of the album utilises their innate capacity to sound huge to absolutely breathtaking effect. What these two highlight (and indeed the rest of the album) is how Buck-Tick refuse to make the same song twice on Yume Miru Uchuu, yet nearly every one is an absolute joy to listen to, through being fun, beautiful, or even a little bit pervy (see Climax Together). Wonderful.

Gil Scott-Heron Reflections
After Free, Gil went on to do a lot of work with Brian Jackson, which is all pretty bloody brilliant. It seemed to give him some lifeblood for his solo work too, spurred on by the election of Reagan and focusing his love for political poetry. Reflections is, on the whole, a really solid, likeable piece of soul-jazz - B Movie however is a landmark treasure. "First thing I wanna say is, mandate my ass" is an iconic start to any song.

Decidedly unsettling dark ambient; sounds like a dungeon synth album eschewing the lead lines for a computer's cries in liminal space. At worst it's a little nondescript, but the better tracks tow the line of spooky and heartbreaking extremely well. Might get a bump with a few more listens, if the mood strikes.

Very cool emoviolence EP. Some lovely drowned skramz, some core breakdowns and, crucially, a ping snare. Far worse ways of spending 7 minutes. rhttps://zegemabeachrecords.bandcamp.com/album/everything-wants-me-to-write-in-cursive
