Sigur Ros Valtari
It's atypical of bands who progressively evolve into somewhat of a more accessible sound to
revisit some of their older ideas, but that's exactly what Sigur Ros did with
Valtari. This is easily the most atmospheric and cold Sigur Ros has sounded in almost
a decade, ever since ( ). It's kind of nostalgic, really. Fans pining to hear what's
inarguably their most emotional material (re: their earlier stuff) will be delighted -and
taken aback- with Valtari. The slow tread of "Var??" and "Valtari," along with the
wall of ambiance and gentle strings that surround them, make them some of Sigur Ros' most
heartfelt works to date. Grey can be a beautiful colour, and there are many shades of it.

Marina Electra Heart
Oh the wasted years! The wasted youth! Marina's new album is destined to be huge in the realm of pop, even though it doesn't really step outside of the genre's conventions. Vocally, Marina harnesses a lot of sentimentality via meticulous production and beats so infectious they'll nestle in and get stuck in your head for weeks on end. Marina's commentary on the many subjects covered on Electra Heart is apt, conscientious, and refreshing. From the psychoanalysis on "Fear and Loathing" to the devilishly clever play-on-words-title of "Teen Idle," a song revealing an adolescent life as wasted on idle fancies, Electra Heart is an album imbued with honesty, passion, and whimsy, and I'm all ears.

mewithoutYou Ten Stories
I'm really not understanding the low ratings for this, especially from those who thought that It's All Crazy! It's All False was a bad album but liked the band's earlier works. This is an exciting remould of elements from Catch For Us the Foxes (admittedly one of their least talked about albums (although I don't know why)). Forgetting about "February 1878," Ten Stories is a pop album at first, and then a splash into the post-hardcore chemists' edgier sound. "Grist For The Malady Mill" is the band's best "pop" song to date, and "Fox's Dream of the Log Flume" rivals some of Catch For Us the Foxes' best moments. Highly recommended for those seeking some of the story-telling whimsy of their previous album mixed with elements that we've all come to adore from the band.
