'As we rode in circles on our bicycles, we
walked on balance beams as the audience

These lyrics precede one of the best moments

Botanist/Oskoreien Green Metal / Deterministic Chaos
I never thought I'd like any cover of
Placebo, but Oskoreien's compelling, droning
rendition of 'Without You, I'm Nothing' is
nice and his original track, 'Deterministic
Chaos,' which surprisingly treads nearer DSBM
territory considering the Placebo cover, owns
in its own right. Both Oskoreien tracks on
the split are fantastic and leave a lasting
impression.

Meanwhile, Botanist continues to throw
surprises at listeners as Otrebor maintains
his signature, unmistakable sound.
Admittedly, the percussion and use of
hammered dulcimers are almost all-to-
familiar, but the songwriting continues to
develop. It is hard to pick highlights but
the single, 'Dracula Vampira,' is a perfect
example of Botanist sounding like Botanist
before offering up a brighter shade of green
suddenly pollinated with a blooming sense of
the unknown.

Isis Celestial
After a brief feeling out process, Isis find their range as Celestial (The Tower) enters like an unchained monster swinging in all directions. Deconstruction Towers is the wringer and we are the linen. Collapse and Crush? If SGNL 03 is the collapse, then the next track is the crush- the middle section meanders with a swagger that sets up a glorious walk-off finish. But wait, there's more. Following a swelling segue, courtesy of C.F.T., we gather for a monolithic finish to an exhausting album. After a brief flirtatious fit on the strings, a pounding riff lays out the foundation for Gentle Time as the listener is forced to muster up just enough gas to ride out of the fire on a chariot composed of equal parts false serenity and chaos. SGNL 04 ties up the album nicely, but the damage is done, the fields have been burned, the drought has tightened its grip. Ladies and Gentleman, this is Celestial, the dark horse to claim itself as the best ISIS album of all.

.5 better than COPE. Congrats, I guess. rThis is an example of great songwriting bogged down by poor production choices. There are so many layered effects on the album that the surface is barely noticeable beneath the echoing fog. This album feels like a missed opportunity for a clear return to form.

I wasn't expecting another C&C release, but the songs most reminiscent of Claudio's full band are the only songs that work very well; his songs that experiment with electronics are subpar. I would describe half of these tracks as fantastic and the other half, regrettably, as awful; the worst kind of mixed bag.

Whitechapel Mark of the Blade
Longtime Whitechapel fan here. Shockingly, the songs with cleans may be the best output rhere if we ignore the ballad-y (but good) solo in Bring Me Home and the premature fade-rout in the closer, Decennium. Anyway, those two tracks, Venomous, the awesome rinstrumental Brotherhood and opener, The Void, are all pretty great. The Corey Taylor rcomparison may be just, but I'm not a bitch so I don't have any bondage pants or rrepressed anger so I don't listen to Slipknot. The vocals and instrumentation in Bring rMe Home reminded me more of A Perfect Circle than anything else, which, surprisingly, rturned out pretty well. The remaining 6 tracks range from 'meh' to 'please stop.' Not rsure how I feel about this, but the good songs here are better than the good songs from rthe last album- of that much, I am sure.
