There are just no words... How anyone can rate this below a 3 is beyond me. This is FAR from an average record
in every sense. Been jamming this almost every single day since it was released. This is the best metal record of
2016, and "The Oppressor" is a contender for top metal tracks of the decade. Soul-shaterringly heavy.

Daughters You Won't Get What You Want
This had to grow on me a bit, but I'm glad it did. I was turned off initially by the lack of traditional heaviness that they had in the past, but the shift into more meditative, tension-building, "mature" songwriting goes over very well for Daughters and has become quite exciting to me. There's a lot of sour guitar dissonance , as expected, but there are far more beautiful passages and textures here as well. I got what I wanted, but didn't know I wanted it until I got it. Favorite tracks: Long Road No Turns, Satan in the Wait, The Flammable Man, The Reason They Hate Me, Guest House
Death Grips The Money Store
This is a very polarizing album. Some will love it to death, and some will hate it with a passion. And it should just be left at that. No one should be attacked as being a pseudo-intellectual asshole who doesn't know the first thing about music and/or is trying to be cool by liking something different from the norm, and no one should be stamped as someone who doesn't get or appreciate the genius that they do not see in the music. Either take it or leave it, and don't judge based on who is listening.

If it weren't for the bedroom-y rough sound of the recording and lack of a full band playing these songs on record, this would be the fiviest of fives, along with the other two records that follow this. This is truly horrifying and unsettling music that is made just familiar sounding enough to keep ones attention for the length of a very challenging listen. These songs are not only skronky and full of skin crawling microtonal harmony, but also heavy and sludgy at many well placed moments. The microtonality is used in a really effective way often, and it doesn't normally feel like it's there just for the sake of it. I hope this project gets a full band treatment sometime in the future. it desperately needs it... Favorite Tracks: All of them, but mainly the last two tracks if I had to pick an absolute favorite or two.

The best release by the band, it holds it own not just because of legacy, but because it emerges as an actual contender in the world of significantly more interesting albums in the genre. Rich tones, fast and technical playing, heaviness: all qualities that seemed to be lack luster or even missing on their previous releases which are so greatly overrated.

One of the best ambient albums I've heard in a while. Seams together so perfectly after having listened to it so many times. It takes what most will see as imperfections/blemishes and centers it's motives around them, making them the reason the album is so beautifuly unique. It feels like someone put disco tunes and infomercials into Madlib's meatgrinder.

Cult Leader A Patient Man
In short, Cult Leader come through with what I can only describe as another solid addition to their discography. It?s not anything more or less than that, but I wouldn?t say it?s disappointing. The riffs overall are a bit more complex and Gaza-esque, and the record is a slightly bigger flex in the dynamics department than it?s predecessor. I can?t say I?m loving their more expansive tracks (much like the last record), but the heavier side of things is done very well. Thought it?s a bit padded out and not as immediate as their debut, it?s still worth your time if you want some seriously pissed sludgey hardcore. Favorites: I Am Healed, Curse of Satisfaction, Craft of Mourning, A World of Joy, Aurum Reclusa.

Death Grips The Powers That B - Part I: Niggas on the Moon
A lot of the lyrical content on here is some of their most cryptic and enjoyable yet. The
music on here is great for the most part, but some of the instrumental elements feel sort of
thrown together/cheaply produced. There's definitely a step down quality wise as far as
mixing and instrumental quality. Taking into account that this was all played by Zach makes
this album all the more impressive and makes up for any blemishes. It's certainly better
within the context of the entire double album as a polar opposite to JD, and it stands as
their most mind-bending piece of work by far. |

Want to like this more, but there are still some fairly predictable/corny moments and a lack of cohesion vocally throughout the record. Still, can?t deny they have a massive sound and bring plenty of syrup-coated moodiness with their heaviness a la Deftones, but with more spite and gloom than any recent Deftones material. 3.7

Well sure the playing is excellent, and the occasional riff stands out, but all the non-sequitur riffage and switching back and forth between breakdowns and melodic passages with barely any dynamic change doesn't do much for me. The screamed vocals are goddamn terrible too. 3.2/5

| Would be an excellent record if these fuckers knew how to write a song. I mean, come on. They've had Kurt Ballou at the helm for 3 records, they've got plenty of energy and dynamics, but I just can't stand the lazy transitions and unashamedly repetitive riffs that have almost nothing to do with each other. I really wanted to love this, but I only find it to be okay overall. I don't mind the more simplistic, pop-proggier, less
djenty direction on a lot of these tracks, but it seems like everything could have been so much more than it is,
especially the closer. The guitar and bass sound absolutely killer, but the vocal performances underwhelmed me
in comparison to the stuff on Inmazes. Also, the drumming on this record is great, but the low level mixing on the
record does it a serious disservice. I'm still rooting for these guys; very unique band, can't wait to see what they
do next. Favorite tracks: Smartfriend, Ruby Pool, Still, Whaler |
