As their numbers mounted, he decided to learn the arts of orchestration and arrangement, even though he couldn't read or write music, taking inspiration from Arvo P?rt, Philip Glass, Henryk Gorecki, Edward Elgar, Ralph Vauhan Williams and Saint-Sa?ns. The result is a collection of songs from cello, woodwind and piano, which he describes as "bedroom classical" ? since he recorded the whole thing in his bedroom ? with layers built using found objects and charity shop instruments." Didn't see this coming, but Keaton doesn't seem to want to remain in one place and that's an admirable sentiment, even if this album strongly lacks his brilliant vocals and lyrics. Definitely a pleasant surprise. |

Mathematics makes a better RZA than RZA these days, stepping up to the boards with the confidence of someone who can throw back to the 90s and the passion of someone looking to the future. Meth and Ghostface sound like they haven't aged a day since the mid 90s, and Meth especially dominates this record with his solo song If Time Is Money coming up an easy highlight. Sure, Masta Killa still sounds like he's been dragged out of bed at 3am to mumble a verse and there's not nearly enough GZA, but what we're looking at here is probably the best Wu in over ten years. |
