A few of the songs are catchy as all get-out, but overall, the songwriting is rather cliche. Worst of all, "Grenade" may be one of the dumbest songs ever written, and it's frustrating that it gets stuck in the head so easily. Under what scenario would he ever have to catch a grenade for someone? Are he and his girlfriend at war? Sorry, Bruno... Maybe she won't die for you, too, because she's worried you're insane. |

Don't get me wrong; I've loved JT since the NSYNC days (sue me) and have enjoyed his previous albums. So I expected to love this album, but there are just too many silly metaphors in sleepily-paced songs that aren't enjoyable enough to justify their cheesiness or length. "Suit and Tie" is a fun danceable track, and "Mirrors," which sounds like it was transplanted from an entirely different album (FutureSex/LoveSounds, perhaps?), is the one track that manages to make a metaphor work and has become one of my favorite songs of 2013. The rest is surprisingly tiresome. So I downloaded "Mirrors," put it on replay, and left it at that. |
