4.5 superb
Yes Fly from Here
The first time I listened to this album I loved it immediately. Benoit David has a superb voice & more than qualifies as a mere temporary replacement for Jon Anderson. Trevor Horn's production is spot on and the band as a whole are on top of their game. As much of the album was written by Trevor Horn & Geoff Downes then it does sound a bit like a Buggles CD but is none the worse for that. The title track may not be up to other epics like "Close To The Edge" or "Awaken" but is a great piece of music nonetheless. The chorus on part 2 is sublime and the track as a whole should sound great live. I particularly liked Chris Squire's "The Man You Always Wanted Me To Be" which has a real sing-a-long coda. The playing from all concerned is excellent and once again the Squire/White rhythm section shows how good it is. Steve Howe's guitar playing is the best I've heard him play in years. I always felt his playing got "bitty" during the "Tormato" sessions and didn't get back on track until "The Ladder". Great to have Geoff Downes back on keyboards too ~ I was (and still am) a great fan of "Drama" and it'll be good to see tracks from this much underated album played live. We've booked seats at "The Armadillo" in Glasgow in November and I can hardly wait! In conclusion this album may not be a "90125" but it's a real return to form and please lads, don't leave it another 10 years before you produce another album...
