Clearly reflecting a band in transition, Pageant tastefully incorporates politics and distortion while stepping tentatively into new genres and topics. While the band does have a tendency to retreat into their comfort zone on tracks like ?I Believe? and ?Just a Touch,? ?Fall on Me? and ?These Days? are two of the band?s best songs.

Propagandhi can't write a bad album apparently. The riffs are a little more rudimentary this time

worthy and cathartic entry into a legendary catalogue.

R.E.M. Murmur
One of the most impressive debut records ever, Murmur?s only real fault is that - with the exception of the unbelievable ?Radio Free Europe? - each of its tracks has a spectacular verse, chorus, or intro as opposed to all three. While that does mean that there are plenty of ?this isn?t one of my favorites ? oh wait I love this? moments, but on the other hand you can?t go wrong with any of these songs.
R.E.M. Reckoning
A solid progression from Murmur, Reckoning delivers more strong indie rock songs with a little bit more tonal and thematic variety. Very consistent, but without a personal attachment to these tracks this is unlikely to transcend ?enjoyable.?
R.E.M. Chronic Town
R.E.M. Fables of the Reconstruction
A welcome change-up from straightforward jangle-pop, Fables does have a few growing pains, sluggish moments, and unmemorable tracks, but three consecutive classics in ?Maps and Legends," "Driver 8," and "Life and How to Live It" and more interesting subject matter are hard to deny.

R.E.M. Out of Time
Out of Time crosses the line from ?variation? to ?mess? a few times, counterpunching the poppiest songs of their career with unwieldy dirges (?Low?), spoken word, and instrumental filler. Many songs have brilliant sections nested within more questionable content (?Radio Song,? ?Belong?). As an album it does not hang together or flow, but four classic tracks including possibly their best ever in ?Country Feedback? keep this one afloat.
R.E.M. Document
The fervent but obscure political elements of Pageant are amplified and lose a lot of their resonance (and tolerability). The metallic sheen of these tracks buoys ?Finest Worksong? and the two hit singles but grates otherwise, and the second half drags with dirges, stadium-sized over-reaches, and Stipe's nasal excesses with the exception of the beautiful ?King of Birds.?
R.E.M. Green
R.E.M.?s poppiest record swings back and forth between bouncy obvious pop-rock, stadium rock, and mandolin ballads with decidedly mixed results. While the cheerfulness is a welcome respite from the cynicism of Document, the record?s best song (?Orange Crush?) is a stylistic holdover from that record.

Rostam Half-Light
The Vampire Weekend keyboardist's debut shows promise and the diversity of sound and worldliness one would expect from the guy who made the band sound interesting in the first place. Some tracks really do sound like his former band; unfortunately, those are often the better ones. If you can get past his sung-through-a-grin voice, there's some cool stuff in here.

Florist If Blue Could Be Happiness
Another entry into the lofi-indie-folk-with-gentle-female-vocals catalogue. Florist have some personality but the lyrics and songwriting never really transcend the cliches of the genre. As with any indie-folk artist, your mileage may vary depending on how likeable you find the singer, but I wasn't too impressed.
Florist Emily Alone
if stream of consciousness lyrics ripped from a moody 10th grader's notebook on top of boring
softly strummed guitar chords sounds appealing then this record is for you. "Still" is the most
embarrassing song I've heard in maybe 5 years
