| I stared at myself in the mirror after listening to this twice in one day thinking, "that was incredibly enjoyable". I'm not going to lie, this is pretty much like embarking on "The Odyssey": it has a few not-so-good parts, but I think that's kind of the point. You can't treat it like a regular album, it deserves a less passive response. Overall, it's top notch if you have the stomach for it. |

Fresh from remixing the entire of Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories, Nicholas Jaar and Dave Harrington return with an album ambitious enough to fill the void between the dancefloor and Django Unchained’s soundtrack. Long-time Jaar fans will be on familiar turf here, though will struggle not to notice the heavier blues and rock influence and Harringtons efforts to lure him towards some late-night club bliss.
Harrington wasn’t entirely unsuccessful in this, as “Freak, Go Home” is the closest Jaar has come to rectifying his own uneasiness at his tracks’ previous lack of danceability. The tempo is pushed up, murky basslines join infectious one-two percussion and it’s all topped off with a recurring melody catchy enough to move even the most miserable of bar lurkers. However, while the dead ends, smothering vocal samples and industrial guitar finish make it more interesting, it doesn’t half result in a confusing first listen.
Elsewhere Darkside are much more chilled out, with the guitar-based, soulful bluesyness of “Heart” and overall seductive, genre-hopping instrumentation, Psychic becomes more of a come-down record than anything else. They seem to enjoy experimenting too much to be immediately accessible - “Greek Light” and “Golden Arrow” show just how far Darkside are willing to go - but Psychic still oozes the essence of cool necessary to make it a fantastic and, hopefully, successful album. |

| At first I agreed with the general consensus that this album was a bit of a dud. It always remained at the top of my library with all the other unsorted stuff because the file-type wouldn't let me tuck it away somewhere else. It was read only or some shit like that - I don't know...rSo whenever I let a new album play too long, it would silently turn to this. I'd get really excited and think "oh god, this is good, what song is this?" before opening the music library and seeing "Spend" or "Digital Doves" or any track from this album, really. I never really paid it too much attention: just reset it on the other album and carried on.rAnd you know what, this final time I've come to terms with the fact this album is actually fucking good. It's lovely- just fucking god darn lovely. |
