I will go through each track on this album with a bit more detail that I have with other albums because this is a masterpiece, and that has so much to talk about. The thing that you have to remember about a Tool album is the fact that there are so many parts to each song and you are going to find sounds you’re not expecting. The first song called “The Grudge” kicks things off beautifully with what is supposedly Maynard’s washing machine spinning up and then some crazy bass and drumming. This is a fantastic song with a chanting verse line followed by a heavy guitar riff. The next song after “The Grudge” is “Eon Blue Apocalypse” that is just guitar and bass mixed together for a short one minute build up for the next song “The Patient”. This incredible song starts off with a slow build up of guitar bass and drums with Maynard gently humming in the distance. The song keeps building slowly until it hits a magnificent wall of distortion and Maynard doing what he does best. This whole song follows better than any other song in existence and that is a simple fact. Following “The Patient” is “Mantra” which some people have described as sounding like a cat being strangled in slow motion, enough said… Next comes “Schism” which has an almost trance like bass riff that is the bass line for all the verses for this song. It then goes off to a nice heavy chorus and back to the crazy bass line. The song slows down a bit and then picks up at the end with the line “I know the pieces fit” repeated with a passion that only Maynard could sing. Moving things along to “Parabol” which is a build up song for the next track “Parabola” which takes “Parabol” and chunks it up with some distortion and pushes the tempo up a little bit. This is one of the only songs on the album that has distortion all the way through. “Ticks and Leeches” follows “Parabola” and starts off with a fast drumbeat with Maynard yelling, “Suck” and Danny Carey utilizing his double kick pedal. This song is a little different to the other songs on this album. It sounds like it could be off of Opiate or Undertow still good though. The next song is “Lateralus”, that is considered to be one of the best Tool songs ever. Like a lot of the other songs on this album it slowly builds up and then transforms itself into a powerful monster of a song. One thing that I have to point out about this song it’s the amazing drumming of Danny Carey that you have to hear to believe. The song rolls on and then changes at 7:20 to a slow heavy that builds up all the way to the end “Spiral Out Keep Going”. “Disposition” is a much slower song that clams everything down after the epic finally of “Lateralus”. It’s a nice song that uses African drums and keeps a constant pace with the lyrics “Watch the weather change” repeating, it’s a nice song. Keeping the same pace as “Disposition”, “Reflection” starts off and holds a steady pace with Maynard’s haunting lyrics flowing over the top of strongly bass guitar song. It holds is pace until a small burst of excitement around the 9-minute mark where things get kicked up a little. Finally the last song is “Triad”, which is all the guitar and a constant drum beat that slows near the end. The very last track on this album is called “Faaip De Oaid”, which is a broadcast of someone speaking about aliens among us. This song scared the crap out of me when I fell a sleep once, I woke up to this static and some guy talking about extra dimensional beings. So that’s all the songs out of the way but I give you my final summary. As you may have noticed I love this album and this band and am very eagerly, like many people, waiting for their next album that hopefully comes out at the end of this year. There is only one word to describe this album MASTERPIECE!Violent Soho Violent SohoViolent Soho are a band from Brisbane that are bringing grunge back to the 21st century. This is their second LP, however this album mainly features re-recordings of song off their first album “We Don’t Belong Here”. For their second self-titled album they have channelled the grunge sound into a fantastic listening experience, think Nirvana meets… Nirvana. My favourite songs off this album would have to be “Narrow Ways”, “Jesus Stole my Girlfriend” and “Muscle Junkie”, but I really think that all of their songs are fantastic in there own way. The iTunes version of this album also features a cover of the song “My Pal” by the Australian band GOD which sounds pretty fantastic. They are also one of the best live acts that I think I have seen. I have also been luck enough to meet Michael (drums) and James (guitar) with some of my friends at the Maram in Canberra. Violent Soho are one of my favourite bands of all time and I cant wait to see what they do in the future.Violent Soho We Don't Belong HereViolent Soho Tinderbox, Neighbour Neighbour EPWavves King of the BeachWavves Wavvves4.5 superbBad Brains Bad BrainsBomb the Music Industry! To Leave or Die in Long IslandChildren Collide Theory of EverythingThis week I’m talking about “The Theory of Everything”, and by that I mean Children Collide’s latest album. Children Collide are an indie band from Melbourne who have been around for a little while now with their first releases being back in 2006. Their sound hasn’t really changed overtime and they stick to an alternative, indie rock sound that has does justice for a modern day rock band. Their first LP, “The Long Now” released in 2009, shares a similar sound to their latest offering with soft verses backed up by punchy distorted choruses. The three singles, “Future Monks”, “Jellylegs” and “My Eagle” all start the album off with a bang, but I cant help but feel that the second half of the album is a bit, hit and miss. Songs like “Complacency No Vacancy” and “Into the sky with Ivy” are awesome and easy to get into, the only song that I didn’t really like was “Loveless”. This song didn’t really seem to fit with the rest of the album in my opinion, but I suppose that it does give the album a bit of depth rather than one rock song after the other. These guys are also really great live, I’ve had the opportunity to see them at the Maram in Canberra and at the Big Day Out in Sydney, and they put on one hell of a show. If you enjoy bands like “British India” or “The Vines” than you will most likely enjoy this band.Children Collide The Long NowCloud Nothings Attack on MemoryDeftones Diamond EyesDeftones White PonyFoo Fighters Wasting LightWell I’ve had about 20 good listen troughs of Wasting Light now and I have to say that I’m very satisfied with what they have resealed. There are some fantastic songs on this album that any fan of any of the previous Foo Fighters albums will love. The album starts off with a big bang with “Bridge Burning” which gives a good indication as to where the album is going. With most of the Foo Fighters albums they tend to start off a bit heavy and then become softer towards the end but with Wasting Light every song tends to have a heavier part to them. My personal favourites on this album would be the crazy “White Limo” and the powerful “I should have Known”(feat. Krist Knovoselic). The entire album is quite fantastic and I have learned to love each song their own unique way. The only song that took some getting used to was “Walk” but I quite like it after listening to it a couple of times. This album has me thinking it could be the best Foo Fighters album out there, it’s definitely my favourite.Foo Fighters One by OneFrenzal Rhomb Smoko at the Pet Food FactoryFuture of the Left The Plot Against Common SenseHelmet BettyISIS OceanicJack White BlunderbussKyuss Blues For The Red SunLadyhawke AnxietyNirvana BleachPelican What We All Come to NeedPond (AUS) FrondPond (AUS) Beard, Wives, DenimRegular John The Peaceful Atom Is A BombRussian Circles EmprosRussian Circles EnterSonic Youth Washing MachineSonic Youth The EternalThe Dandy Warhols Welcome To The Monkey HouseThe Smashing Pumpkins ZeitgeistThe Vines Future PrimitiveTool 10,000 DaysTool Ænima4.0 excellentA Perfect Circle Mer de NomsA Perfect Circle Thirteenth StepButthole Surfers Independent Worm SaloonDeftones Around the FurFoo Fighters Live at Wembley StadiumFoo Fighters Echoes, Silence, Patience & GraceFoo Fighters There Is Nothing Left to LoseFuture of the Left CursesISIS The Red SeaJebediah KosciuszkoKyuss Welcome To Sky ValleyMastodon RemissionMastodon LeviathanMelvins Stoner WitchThis post is about the fantastic 1994 Melvins Album, Stoner Witch, which I have been listening to non-stop really. If you are unfamiliar with the Melvins, they are a grunge/Metal band that have been around for ages and released so many albums that it’s hard to keep count. Stoner Witch, in my opinion is one of their finest works and has some really interesting and dynamics between the two drummers and the heavily distorted guitar riffs. The Melvins have a very raw grunge sound that has been with them on about every record that they have released. This album has some great songs on it for anyone who loves grunge music such as Queen, Skweetis, and my personal favorite Revolve. This is one of my favorite Melvins albums, other albums that might interest you if you enjoy this would be, A Senile Animal, also by Melvins, or Inhaler by Tad.No Age Weirdo RippersNo Age Everything In BetweenPelican AustralasiaRammstein HerzeleidRammstein Reise, ReiseSonic Youth Confusion Is SexSoundgarden Down on the UpsideThe Living End Modern ArtilleryThe Smashing Pumpkins OceaniaTool UndertowTool OpiateWeezer Weezer3.5 greatFoo Fighters In Your HonorSonic Youth Sonic YouthThe Living End The Ending Is Just The Beginning RepeatingThe Smashing Pumpkins Adore3.0 goodFoo Fighters Medium RareHelmet MonochromePelican The Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon...2.5 averageISIS Mosquito Control2.0 poorDeftones Koi No Yokan1.5 very poorMetallica Metallica1.0 awfulGuns N' Roses Chinese DemocracyGuns N' Roses Greatest HitsISIS Oceanic: Remixes and ReinterpretationsPink The Truth About Love
