This is the first in the Pikes series that seems like a truly great album- everything up to this just kind of seemed like a fun/wacky little indulgence. There are some killer tracks here. I love The Patrolman.
Buckethead March of the Slunks
Another great Pike with very minimal filler. A bit funkier than most of the other pikes, it's a pretty sexy album with a lot of great riffs. One I will come back to.

Easily the most lean and cohesive record Deftones have released. It's hard to pick rstandouts because every track is good, but the second half of the album is so wonderful. The rlast five tracks all flow together in such a seamless way and contain moments that feel, rrespectively, like the best of their newer sound, compelling throwbacks to their earliest rmaterial, and emotional and expansive new territory. AotY contender for sure.

This came together super well. The third ep is especially good, and the fourth has this sound of finality to it that really ties it all together.
Failure Wild Type Droid
I see this album as more of a throwback to their first two albums, albeit with a far more delicate touch. It's a bit strange comparing it to their last three, because those albums are all pretty wide in scope. This can't be better than something like Fantastic Planet, which is nearly twice as long and of a similar quality throughout. But this is a subtle change in direction that comes across more in the pace of the music than the stylings or overall sounds. It's exciting to have a Failure album that feels more brisk, urgent, and rawly melancholic. This is such a mature release that adds something genuinely new to their discography. I can't ask for much more. About half the album sticks out as being among their best (Long Division made me feel like I was listening to Disintegration!) and there isn't a bad track whatsoever.

Thinking about doing a full review of this once I get done with my schoolwork for the week... rI think the album is great. Everything I wanted it to be. I never expected them to surpass Loveless, and this definitely doesnt, but its a phenomenal album nonetheless. First three tracks echo Loveless so well, and then the band decides to move on into much more experimental territory. "New You" and "Nothing Is" are amazing.

This one took a lot of listening to really grow on me, and I still sort of feel like I am ranking it a bit highly, but I just really love the headspace this album puts me in. It's strange, because the individual songs here are really not all that great; none of them hold a candle to any individual track on The Flesh Prevails, and that honestly probably goes for Empyrean, too. But Dreamless has this remarkable flow to it; all the songs really do sound the same, but when I treat the album as giant song, I find a really enveloping and strangely soothing atmosphere. It is a very listenable album in a way that sets it apart within its genre.

This is probably my favorite Filter album, and I really love Title of Record. The thing about this one is that it's extremely fast paced. The songs are varied and every track here has something to offer. The first 6 songs all tap into a different sort of appeal, and they typically pull it off really well. This makes for an album that is enjoyable throughout its entirety even if few individual tracks blow anyone away. While it does eventually revert to something more similar to the standard hard rock they've been doing for an album or two, the overall feel of the album is a lot more ferociously scrappy than they've been in some time. Favorite tracks: Mother E, Nothing in my Hands, Kid Blue.

If you hated Universal Themes, this probably won't win you over. But you should know it is essentially useless
to hope Mark goes back to his old style-- as he says here, "the world's changed and he's not that songwriter
anymore." My first impressions of this were that it was needlessly bloated and some of the beats were a bit
same-y, but as I listen more and more, tracks that I wrote off on the first listen or two are starting to grow on
me. "God Bless Ohio", "The Highway Song", "Lone Star" and "70s TV Show Theme" are my early favorites. "Butch
Lullaby" and "Stranger than Paradise" are growing on me. I love seeing Mark's evolution, even if it might seem
unreasonable to imagine this new style yielding a song that means as much to me as, say, "Duk Koo Kim." He's
an interesting figure and I'm glad he shows no signs of slowing down. |

In many ways, this feels like a "return to form" for the band, but not a "return to sound."
In other words, I can't say that this sounds like the first three or four Volta records, but
for the first time since the band's early days, they feel fully tapped into the experimental
weirdness that made them stand out among their peers. Jazz, trip-hop, and pop are more
fitting genre tags for this than metal or even rock; those looking for wild bursts of
spastic guitars will be left scratching their heads. But if you give these songs some time
to breathe, you'll notice that there is a creative intensity at play that is so purely The
Mars Volta. While I'm left wanting a few more moments that stand out and grab me,
particularly in the second half, paying attention to the smaller sonic details opens up an
intoxicating and unique vibe that is simply unlike anything else I have heard, and it is
very much worth revisiting. I like every Volta album, but this is the most uninhibited
they've been since Bedlam, and therefore their best since that time. |

I take it as a great sign that they are dropping this more or less as a surprise out of nowhere. There's usually such pretentious promotion and build up for SP albums. I am hoping the raw, off the cuff nature of it translates to the music.

groundbreaking or anything, but I can't say it's that much less enjoyable than their classic

Pretty solid release overall, but feels like a step down from Dissolution, which I loved a
lot. Overall, it's more lightweight than anything else they have done, which is not
necessarily a bad thing; but my first impression is that they are just doing the same thing
they've been doing for a while, but with less. The stripping down only occasionally seems to
reveal something new, but it's great when it does (like with "Bad Larry", which sounds oddly
like middle-era REM to me). It's great if you're already into space rock, but doesn't add
much for those that are less into the genre, or feel it becoming a bit oversaturated/stale. |

Probably my favorite thing they've done in a few years. Some really good riffs, and really solid throughout, but nothing truly classic. Sometimes I really want this band to stop fooling around with various lineups and just slow down and craft one long, really great LP, but their more unconventional approach to making music and recording is a big part of what makes them special. Like most of their albums, I'll take the best bits and add them to a really good playlist.

Easily the worst of the recent deluge of albums from Omar Rodriguez-Lopes. Starts and ends well enough- the opening tracks are slow burners with memorable vocals and the ending four are really just one long, enjoyable and blistering instrumental song- but the middle section feels ill advised, with only "Mariposa" worthy of being salvaged.

Album is very good. Probably their best since Yield actually. They sound very comfortable in their skin, which is great since on the self-titled they seemed to be trying too hard to capture their former grungy-ness at times, and Backspacer was overly upbeat- and upbeat is fine, it just seemed a little awkward at times. This though... it's very balanced. "My Father's Son" "Pendulum" "Sleeping By Myself" and "Yellow Moon" immediately stood out to me. "Getaway" is a great opener and "Mind Your Manors" sucked as a single but works quite as a simple burst of energy on the album.

Ghost (SWE) Skeletá
In my youth, I always wondered what it would be
like to see a small band blow up and become
legendary. I felt envy for the dads I knew that got
to see Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin at
a dive bar. My chance for this experience seemed to
emerge when I saw Ghost perform an
uncrowded 2pm set at Lollapalooza; now I see them
daily, on billboards over my city during
my dismal morning commute-- I suppose being
plastered on a billboard counts as reaching
legendary status? Rather than said advertisement
triggering excitement, as I might once have
expected, it felt more like a nagging reminder that
I might as well try and sit through
their new music. Obviously, Ghost has always been a
novelty act, but the whole concoction
was, at one time, interesting, fresh, and good
enough to believe they might evolve into
something really special. But, since Meliora, the
returns have diminished exponentially from
album to album. Skeleta sees the schtick wear
precariously thin. This is unchallenging
music, completely lacking any element of subversion
that might make such an act interesting.
I didn't need to listen to this to have already
heard it, and it will satisfy the hordes
that find this aspect to be a positive quality
rather than an utterly disqualifying sign of
sub-mediocrity. |

Pure Pumpkins pop, but with some guts, energy, and passion behind it musically. Though I think I rlike 2012's Oceania better as a whole, there are some single cuts from this one that top any rsingle track from Oceania's grander scale. Will be interesting to see how this pairs with next ryear's Day for Night. Tiberius is probably the best thing Corgan has done since MCIS.
