5.0 classic
Animal Collective Sung Tongs
Animal Collective Merriweather Post Pavilion
Nothing more needs to be said about this. It's the distilled essence of everything you fantasized youth to be about when you used to lay awake and watch the stars in August. It's one of the best summer albums ever, applicable playlisting for any emotional context. It sounds like 2009, if 2009 were a honey-based hallucinogenic space-ale for your EARS.
Belle and Sebastian If You're Feeling Sinister
I think this is the most charming record I have ever heard. It is all at once beautiful, endearing, funny, melancholic - maybe just a little bit homosexual - without any noticeable shift away from a single one of those tones.

Kate Bush Hounds of Love
King Crimson In the Court of the Crimson King
This this is pretty much a fucking classic, so I doubt I have anything significant to say about it. But I will say that every prog rock album I hear sounds like it is trying to be this, but nothing ever is.

I want to rate this album a 5, but much of the second half is markedly less successful at conveying what everything in the first half does remarkably. "Unison" is one of my favorite songs ever, though.

I'll admit, this rating has quite a bit of nostalgic padding, but nevertheless, I think this album is perfect. The progression of sound and sensitivity from song to song is unparalleled. I love hearing this album shift from ambient bliss to joyous rock-storms to some of the catchiest pop tunes in indie rock history. This album is so rich in diversity and passion. Nothing else can make me feel 16 again while still feeling like a real life grown up record made by and for adults. I wish my farts came out sounding like Almost Crimes.

This is basically my favorite EP ever. Moya is such an ideal soundtrack for the violent climax of everything ever going to shit for everybody, and BBF3 is probably the most fun a track this long has ever been with its leviathan intensity and volcanic badassery. Those are WORDS, son.

Beirut can never really hold my attention, so March of the Zapotec being as short as it is allows me to appreciate everything he's doing without losing focus. Holland is more my speed - My Wife Lost in the Wild shatters my comically large glasses.

Pink Floyd Animals
Musically, I think it's their peak. Gilmour has his best solos, and from my perspective, Waters delivers on his mission statement in terms of songwriting more than any other Pink Floyd record. It seems blasphemous for me to say, considering the number of years that this album predates ME with, but it just feels like it doesn't have anywhere near as much of the heart as earlier Pink Floyd recordings. Besides, it's a theme I've heard countless times before - in other media, as well. I fully appreciate this as a 5/5 release, but it'll always be less enjoyable, and less Pink Floyd for me than, say, Meddle or Wish You Were Here.

I want to love this thing so much, but it's just so goddamn long and not even remotely diverse. It's over an hour of astounding lovemaking guitar war, without a single misstep, but the fact that it all sort of blurs together and ultimately ends up being just "loud" in this format completely kills my desire to call this thing perfect. It does have some incredible tracks regardless, though. "The Other Shoe" is one of my favorites of 2011, easily.
