I was really surprised to see so many people panning this album. For me, although the album had a new dance side to it, it was a welcome return to the elements that made their first and second so great. There was the return of that repetitive drone and groove that had been missing from lullabies. I don't think the reviewers complaint about the lack of 'melody' matters to be honest, the album is full of solid basslines, aggressive dancy guitar interplay and the performance on the drums that Joey Castillo has threatened to produce but never really had the chance since he joined the band. Granted this is probably the least fluid of all previous QOTSA efforts. It seems to be more like a compilation of songs rather than a solid complete album. However, i think it signifies a new and exciting sound that is sure to be improved upon in 2011.
