3.5 great
The Elms The Great American Midrange
Sadly it looks as though this is going to be the bands last studio album, their break up was announced on June 1st 2010, fortunately though, it’s brilliant. The Great American Midrange followed quite quickly after Chess Hotel a departure from the bands usual style. So basically I was expecting another brash rock n’ roll album vaguely reminiscent of Jet, even the first track “Strut” lolls you into believing this is the case . However where the album really starts is track 2 “Unless God Appears First” For one last time Owen Thomas pulls it out of the bag with his distinctive lyrical presence, backed up with songs that return to the bands previous knack for intertwining delicate guitar work with their trademark big riffs. In 12 tracks they seem to encompass almost every aspect of their 10 year musical career, from the infectious single “Back To Indiana” to the lamenting track “The Little Ways”, its all there. It’s hard not to wonder whether this was by design, Thomas perhaps realising this was their last album whilst recording it, regardless, what a triumph to end on.

3.0 good
