| IF i could give this album a six out of five, I would. I LOVE THIS ALBUM more than anything BOC have ever recorded. Side A (Black) is superb - four absolutely storming hard rock tracks - The Red and The Black, Od'd On Life Itself, Hot Rails To Hell and the wonderful Seven Screaming Dizbusters. Side 2 (Red) is just as wonderful but only ever slightly less wonderful. Baby Ice Dog (an early Patti Smith lyrics), Wings Wetted Down, Teen Archer ("ballin' all night, ballin' all day but she won't ball with me") and best of all Mistress of The Salmon Salt (Quicklime Girl). Why don't more people know this and love. I bought this in the 70s as a kid, in my music formative years and never looked back. BOC on tour forever.rNo 2 in three perfect albums. |

Dark, broody almost progressive hard rock (are they heavy prog) with some of the finest and most intelligent lyrics you will ever hear on a hard rock record. None of the "Suck it baby and I'll show you my love" type shite that fouled hard rock music. More like "...blasts from clustered R4M quartets in my snout and see those English planes go burn".."I've opened my veins too many times and the poison's in my head and in mind"..."I am becalmed, lost to nothing, warm weather and holocaust". This is timeless hard rock and should be played LOUD and should be in every self respecting rock fan's collection. |

| There is nothing missing. Don't forget he is reinventing a whole genre here. It's not just playing acoustic guitar, it's acoustic fingerstyle, progressive acoustic, heavy new age, whatever you want to call it and this is a perfect example of the genre. Standout tracks are Aerial Boundaries, Bensusan, Ragamuffin, Rickover's Dream, Hot Type, Menage a Trois, The Magic Farmer. I didn't give it a perfect rating as I don't understand why he bothered with a cover of "After The Goldrush". If he wanted to include a cover there were so many better ones he was playing live at the time such as Captain Kennedy (Neil Young) or Almost Cut My Hair or any one of the many demos that he never officially released such as Adrienne. | One of my favourite Michael Hedges records. After releasing a variety of albums containing songs (with words) as well as solos this was an (almost) exclusively solo album. Almost no singing, one or two alternative instruments for atmosphere and texture but mostly just the guitar. And how the man played. There are so many standout tracks that it's difficult to name one. However, the best track on the CD has to be "Baal t'Shuvah" with the most beautiful rising melody and harmonic. rRIP Michael. |

| This is a great album. Elvis Costello's song writing is so much more than almost any of his contemporaries, the nearest thing the UK has produced to Lennon & McCartney since Lennon & McCartney. This is a very varied album, ranging from rock, country, smooth jazz and 1920s vaudeville. I love it. |

| Michael Hedges did to the acoustic guitar what Miles Davis did for jazz, Hendrix did for rock and basically what the computer has done to all our lives. It is sincerely one of those rare (but you hear all the time) cases of how one person can change the face of music, in this instance the acoustic guitar. Hedges was a genius who played the guitar like he had eight hands.rBreakfast In The Field was his first release, having recorded and demo'd and played live for a few years. This is the sound of a man perfecting his craft. How to make the guitar not sound like the guitar every expects to hear. Make it sound like a piano, make it a percussion instrument, make it sound different but inventing new tunings but don't make it sound just like an acoustic guitar. Although there is much better to follow, Breakfast In The Field has some beautiful moments (The Happy Couple, Breakfast in The Field, Lenono). If you play guitar, you may despair of your playing after you hear this. |
