For anyone who has seen Matt live over the years, this album is can be a nostalgic reminder of how intimate
and powerful a presence he can have. For someone who hasn't seen him, this is a great introduction. As he
has always done throughout his career, he focuses mostly on his most recent album, which in this case is a
good thing. The interesting thing for those people who are already fans of Hospital Music (which is primarily
acoustically and orchestrally driven) is that this album offers the chance to hear these songs in an electrified
and raw setting. I find that this album tends to drag in the middle, particularly on the songs that are part of

| This is an unbelievable body of work and easily on par with any of Van's classics. There are some forays into gospel and celtic that may not please everyone, but they provide colour up against the nearly unbearable beauty of compositions like "Professional Jealousy", "Green Mansions", "Village Idiot", and "Why Must I Always Explain" not to mention the title track. A serious must for fans, or anyone into chill heart-felt music and tasteful instrumentation and arrangements. |

While I can appreciate that Kylesa is at the point in their career where they wish to experiment and indulge
themselves a bit, I am somewhat disappointed with this album. My opinion is that they should have spent
less time wanking with the pedal effects and more time on structuring the songs to be more interesting, as
there are some touching pieces to be found here. There is also the fact that the "two drummer schtick" is
only a schtick if your drummers fail to make the band sound any different than it would with one. It should
either sound heavier or more intricate, like The Melvins. All in all, it is a good listen, but not nearly as
dynamic as its predecessor. There are new ideas introduced here besides an effects-laden sound, such as
more personal lyrics and more confident singing from Laura Pleasants, but they are not enough to make this
the album that I would hope to hear from this band. And yes, Don't Look Back is severely weak. |
