The sound is more brightly polished and busily layered than on previous outings, and though this means the individual songs are not immediately pop-catchy, they are all the more haunting. The album has a vicious thematic cohesiveness that is enthralling in a minor, off beat way which is distinctively Interpol's. Here Banks seems to take a bit of a vocal/lyrical back seat in allowing Interpol's sonic atmosphere to emerge of it's own necessity and navigate it's own new developments. This choice seems all-the-more to free his voice to explore an unfaltering dynamic range. This album rewards those willing to go deep.
