4.5 superb
Agalloch Ashes Against the Grain
Ahab The Call of the Wretched Sea
Celtic Frost Monotheist
This album does several things very well. It blends several metal genres (thrash metal, black metal, and doom metal) together very well without sounding thrown together. Also, it can be soft in certain sections without being too boring and without taking too much away from heavier songs like Progeny and Ground and Ain Elohim. The songs are varied enough to be interesting. It's obvious yet unique in a weird way (perhaps like it was what many thought of doing but couldn't figure out how to go about it). The part of the album that really is a treat is Triptych. While the intro (Totengott) and the outro (Winter) are somewhat ambient, Synagoga Satanae is certainly among the highlights of this album. It is mostly a brooding doom piece, but at the 7:20 mark, it becomes very haunting with the lyrics "Rise, Synagoga Satanae, Lies, Lucifuge Rofocale" being screamed over and over. Overall, a well constructed album with something for a variety of metal fans. Among the songs I'd highly recommend are Progeny, Ground, Obscured, and Triptych.
DOOM VS Aeternum Vale
Johan Ericson, well known for his work with Draconian, makes a dramatic entrance as a solo artist with his debut album, "Aeternum Vale". "The Light That Would Fade" is undoubtedly the best song on the album with beautiful calm passages that actually fit with the rest of the song, which is hard to find nowadays. It's ending, which picks up the tempo a bit and features a guitar solo, is also well placed. "Empire of the Fallen" and "The Faded Earth" both follow a similar heavier feel and are both quality doom. Musically, they are very similar, lyrically they are different (which is good for keeping interest). "Oblivion Upon Us" changes the musical themes a bit by adding more prominent backing chior vocals, piano, and focusing more on vocals over all. "The Crawling Insects" is a song that I think any Swallow the Sun fan would enjoy (similar core riffs used). Ending with "Aeternus", the album returns to the feel of "The Light That Would Fade" with a similar emphasis on the feelings of a very lonely and silent death. Overall, an impressive doom album. Especially considering he does everything on it.

Within Temptation Black Symphony
The fact that it was done live with the The Metropole Orchestra may be the main reason I'd call this excellent. Within Temptation is a band known for making great music with at least somewhat complex arrangements. On this though, they really do shine and as they usually do for their big tours, they make it one hell of a spectacle to behold. If you liked the album versions of the tracks featured on Black Symphony, you'll love their live orchestral versions. Now, that being said, I can't call it perfect. Some songs don't translate perfectly to large scale orchestral arrangements and the guitars seem to get drowned out a bit by the orchestra. Still, it's an overall great CD and great to watch. To any Within Temptation fan, I'd recommend this.
Yearning Merging Into Landscapes
Stumbled across this across not too long ago. With a sort of progressive sound mixed in with atmospheric doom metal, this album is truly reminiscent of early Green Carnation with a heavier twist. The title track is certainly a gem, as is the rest of the album. Still in the process of listening to this band more in depth, but so far I feel that it's definitely a gem that's been overlooked.

Evanescence Evanescence
Oddly enough, everything besides their studio albums seem to be their more 'inspired' releases (Except for Anywhere But Home). This, their first E.P., I particularly liked because it showcases them at what they were much better at: mellow, acoustic, slightly more dark-wave sounding music. A majority of the songs are acoustic songs, either with guitar or piano, that are pretty much stripped of anything fancy, which works in this case. They never get too over the top and stick to a mellow feel even when the tempo picks up, like on "So Close". The lyrics seem pretty simple but they don't take away too much from the music. However, they do get better on what is probably the best and the most intricate song Evanescence has ever written: "Understanding". Now, that's not saying much, but the song really is good. It flows almost flawlessly, it has many well woven in layers, and has a superb ending by Evanescence standards. Even Amy Lee's voice shines a bit here. But you will hear her straining every so often. Sure it won't win awards, but it's a nice little recording to have and is pleasing to the ears, surprisingly.

Musically, it sounds too much like Turning Season Within. Lyrically, it's lackluster and rather cheap. Draconian has finally made an album I'd rather not buy. Hopefully they make another one that is actually worth listening too. I'm still wondering how they got from the magnificence of Where Lovers Mourn to the utter "meh" of this album.

These have to be the corniest lyrics I've ever heard a doom metal band write. I say corny because there's a difference between creating a beautiful or sorrowful image through lyrics and throwing material from what other bands have done at a wall and seeing what comes out. The synthesis is overused in a way that is unparalleled, the guitars are atrocious, the drums are the only highlight and are barely even that good, and nothing at all is done to be unique whatsoever. I've heard too much of what's on this album on other albums (done better then they are here) to be remotely impressed.

We Are The Fallen Tear The World Down
There's not much to say about this album that hasn't already been said. You can pretty much match up any song on this album to one on Fallen (Tear The World Down>Whisper, Sleep Well My Angel>My Immortal, Bury Me Alive>Going Under, etc.). Besides that, the guitars are even worse (including a bass that you can barely hear), the drums that are well below average even for mainstream rock, the lyrics are still based on whiny relationship angst, the synth still sounds like an afterthought, and the only bright side is a somewhat gifted singer named Carly Smithson. This album is nothing new, is even worse then the album it's trying to emulate, and is truly disappointing. People have said, try not to see this as a Fallen twin. But if you listen to this album after having listened to Fallen you realize something: This isn't a Fallen twin. It's more like a disfigured Fallen twin.
