Sort by: Rating | Release Date | Rating Date | Name4.5 superbAgalloch Ashes Against the GrainAhab The Call of the Wretched SeaCeltic Frost MonotheistThis album does several things very well. It blends several metal genres (thrash metal, black metal, and doom metal) together very well without sounding thrown together. Also, it can be soft in certain sections without being too boring and without taking too much away from heavier songs like Progeny and Ground and Ain Elohim. The songs are varied enough to be interesting. It's obvious yet unique in a weird way (perhaps like it was what many thought of doing but couldn't figure out how to go about it). The part of the album that really is a treat is Triptych. While the intro (Totengott) and the outro (Winter) are somewhat ambient, Synagoga Satanae is certainly among the highlights of this album. It is mostly a brooding doom piece, but at the 7:20 mark, it becomes very haunting with the lyrics "Rise, Synagoga Satanae, Lies, Lucifuge Rofocale" being screamed over and over. Overall, a well constructed album with something for a variety of metal fans. Among the songs I'd highly recommend are Progeny, Ground, Obscured, and Triptych.DOOM VS Aeternum ValeJohan Ericson, well known for his work with Draconian, makes a dramatic entrance as a solo artist with his debut album, "Aeternum Vale". "The Light That Would Fade" is undoubtedly the best song on the album with beautiful calm passages that actually fit with the rest of the song, which is hard to find nowadays. It's ending, which picks up the tempo a bit and features a guitar solo, is also well placed. "Empire of the Fallen" and "The Faded Earth" both follow a similar heavier feel and are both quality doom. Musically, they are very similar, lyrically they are different (which is good for keeping interest). "Oblivion Upon Us" changes the musical themes a bit by adding more prominent backing chior vocals, piano, and focusing more on vocals over all. "The Crawling Insects" is a song that I think any Swallow the Sun fan would enjoy (similar core riffs used). Ending with "Aeternus", the album returns to the feel of "The Light That Would Fade" with a similar emphasis on the feelings of a very lonely and silent death. Overall, an impressive doom album. Especially considering he does everything on it.Draconian Where Lovers MournDraconian Arcane Rain FellDraconian The Burning HaloGreen Carnation Light Of Day, Day Of DarknessLacrimosa EchosNightwish OnceOpeth Still LifeOpeth DamnationOpeth Ghost ReveriesOpeth In Live Concert at the Royal Albert HallSepticflesh The Great MassTriptykon Eparistera DaimonesTriptykon ShatterTristania World Of Glass4.0 excellentAgalloch The MantleAkira Yamaoka Silent Hill 4: The RoomAll That Remains The Fall of IdealsArkona (RUS) Goi, Rode, Goi!Be'lakor Stone's ReachBloodbath Nightmares Made FleshBloodbath Unblessing the PurityBurzum Hvis Lyset Tar OssCandlemass NightfallCeltic Frost Morbid TalesCeltic Frost To Mega TherionChaostar ThrenodyChimaira ChimairaCradle of Filth Cruelty and the BeastDanzig Danzig III: How The Gods KillDark Fortress YlemDimmu Borgir Spiritual Black DimensionsDon Davis The Matrix RevolutionsDraconian Turning Season WithinEsoteric MetamorphogenesisEstatic Fear A Sombre DanceEvanescence OriginGate of Sorrow Enter Through The GateIn Mourning Shrouded DivineIn Vain (NO) The Latter RainInsomnium Above the Weeping WorldKatatonia Brave Murder DayKatatonia Sounds Of DecayKatatonia Night Is the New DayLacrimosa ElodiaLacrimosa AngstLacrimosa SaturaLoss DespondLunatic Soul Lunatic SoulMoonspell Night EternalMy Dying Bride The Dreadful HoursMy Dying Bride Songs of Darkness, Words of LightNightwish OceanbornOpeth MorningriseOpeth Blackwater ParkOpeth LamentationsOpeth The Roundhouse TapesPorcupine Tree In AbsentiaPorcupine Tree DeadwingRiverside Out Of MyselfRobin Trower Bridge Of SighsRotting Christ A Dead PoemRotting Christ Sanctus DiavolosRotting Christ TheogoniaSarah McLachlan SurfacingScar Symmetry Pitch Black ProgressScorn EvanescenceSepticflesh CommunionSepticflesh Sumerian DaemonsShape of Despair Angels Of DistressShape of Despair Illusion's PlayShining (SWE) V - HalmstadShining (SWE) IV - The Eerie ColdShining (SWE) VI - KlagopsalmerSwallow the Sun Plague Of ButterfliesTheatre Of Tragedy Velvet Darkness They FearTheatre Of Tragedy AégisThree Days Grace One-XTristania Widow's WeedsTristania Darkest WhiteVirgin Black Requiem - Mezzo ForteVirgin Black Requiem - FortissimoWithin Temptation Black SymphonyThe fact that it was done live with the The Metropole Orchestra may be the main reason I'd call this excellent. Within Temptation is a band known for making great music with at least somewhat complex arrangements. On this though, they really do shine and as they usually do for their big tours, they make it one hell of a spectacle to behold. If you liked the album versions of the tracks featured on Black Symphony, you'll love their live orchestral versions. Now, that being said, I can't call it perfect. Some songs don't translate perfectly to large scale orchestral arrangements and the guitars seem to get drowned out a bit by the orchestra. Still, it's an overall great CD and great to watch. To any Within Temptation fan, I'd recommend this. Yearning Merging Into LandscapesStumbled across this across not too long ago. With a sort of progressive sound mixed in with atmospheric doom metal, this album is truly reminiscent of early Green Carnation with a heavier twist. The title track is certainly a gem, as is the rest of the album. Still in the process of listening to this band more in depth, but so far I feel that it's definitely a gem that's been overlooked. 3.5 great3 Doors Down Away from the SunAgalloch Pale FolkloreAgalloch Marrow of the SpiritAhab The Divinity of OceansAlice in Chains Nothing Safe: Best of the BoxAll That Remains This Darkened HeartApocalyptica Inquisition SymphonyApocalyptica CultArch Enemy Doomsday MachineArch Enemy Black EarthArch Enemy Anthems of RebellionArch Enemy Wages of SinAs I Lay Dying Frail Words CollapseBathory BathoryBe'lakor The Frail TideBlack Sabbath Black SabbathBloodbath Resurrection Through CarnageBloodbath Breeding DeathBloodbath The Fathomless MasteryBreaking Benjamin PhobiaBurzum BurzumCadaveria In Your BloodCeltic Frost Into the PandemoniumCoheed and Cambria From Fear Through the Eyes of MadnessColdplay A Rush of Blood to the HeadColdplay Viva la Vida or Death and All His FriendsConverge Jane DoeCradle of Filth NymphetamineCynic FocusCynic Traced in AirDark Fortress SeanceDarkthrone A Blaze in the Northern SkyDaylight Dies Dismantling DevotionDeath The Sound of PerseveranceDeathspell Omega Fas - Ite, Maledicti, In Ignem AeternumDeathspell Omega ParacletusDimmu Borgir Enthrone Darkness TriumphantDimmu Borgir StormblåstDimmu Borgir AbrahadabraDisillusion Back to Times of SplendorDisturbed The SicknessDOOM VS Dead Words SpeakDream Theater Train of ThoughtDream Theater Images And WordsDream Theater Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a MemoryDream Theater Black Clouds and Silver LiningsEmilie Autumn OpheliacEnslaved IsaEnslaved Axioma Ethica OdiniEpica Design Your UniverseEsoteric The Maniacal ValeEvanescence EvanescenceOddly enough, everything besides their studio albums seem to be their more 'inspired' releases (Except for Anywhere But Home). This, their first E.P., I particularly liked because it showcases them at what they were much better at: mellow, acoustic, slightly more dark-wave sounding music. A majority of the songs are acoustic songs, either with guitar or piano, that are pretty much stripped of anything fancy, which works in this case. They never get too over the top and stick to a mellow feel even when the tempo picks up, like on "So Close". The lyrics seem pretty simple but they don't take away too much from the music. However, they do get better on what is probably the best and the most intricate song Evanescence has ever written: "Understanding". Now, that's not saying much, but the song really is good. It flows almost flawlessly, it has many well woven in layers, and has a superb ending by Evanescence standards. Even Amy Lee's voice shines a bit here. But you will hear her straining every so often. Sure it won't win awards, but it's a nice little recording to have and is pleasing to the ears, surprisingly.Evoken Antithesis of LightEvoken Embrace the EmptinessFall Out Boy Infinity on HighFen The Malediction FieldsFoo Fighters Echoes, Silence, Patience & GraceForest of Shadows DepartureFuneral From These WoundsGreen Carnation Journey To The End Of The NightGreen Day American IdiotHans Zimmer and James Newton Howard The Dark KnightHellhammer Demon EntrailsImmortal Pure HolocaustImmortal Diabolical Fullmoon MysticismImmortal All Shall FallInsomnium Since the Day It All Came DownInsomnium One for SorrowKamelot The Black HaloKamelot EpicaKamelot Poetry for the PoisonedKatatonia The Great Cold DistanceKatatonia Dance of December SoulsKillswitch Engage As Daylight DiesLacuna Coil ComaliesLacuna Coil KarmacodeLacuna Coil In A ReverieLethian Dreams Bleak Silver StreamsLunatic Soul Lunatic Soul IILux Occulta The Mother and the EnemyMelechesh The EpigenesisMetallica MetallicaMoonspell MemorialMoonspell IrreligiousMy Dying Bride Turn Loose the SwansNeurosis The Eye Of Every StormNightwish Angels Fall FirstNightwish WishmasterNightwish Highest HopesNovembers Doom The Pale Haunt DepartureOpeth OrchidOpeth DeliveranceOpeth My Arms, Your HearseOpeth WatershedOpeth The Candlelight YearsParadise Lost GothicParadise Lost In RequiemParamore Riot!Red Hot Chili Peppers Stadium ArcadiumRemembrance Silencing The MomentsRiverside Rapid Eye MovementRotting Christ KhronosRotting Christ GenesisRotting Christ AealoSepticflesh Revolution DNAShadowgarden AshenSilverstein Discovering the WaterfrontStraight Line Stitch To Be GodlikeSwallow the Sun The Morning Never CameSwallow the Sun HopeThe Howling Void Shadows Over The CosmosTherion Symphony Masses: Ho Drakon Ho MegasTool LateralusTool ÆnimaTotalSelfHatred TotalSelfHatredTrail Of Tears Bloodstained EnduranceTristania AshesTristania IlluminationTristania Beyond The VeilTyranny Tides of AwakeningUlver Bergtatt - Et eeventyr i 5 capitlerVirgin Black Sombre RomanticWithin Temptation The Silent ForceWithin Temptation EnterWithin Temptation The Heart of EverythingX Japan JealousyYearning EvershadeYearning Frore Meadow3.0 goodAlesana The EmptinessAll That Remains Behind Silence and SolitudeAll That Remains OvercomeAll That Remains …For We Are ManyAnathema SerenadesApocalyptica Worlds CollideArch Enemy Rise of the TyrantAs I Lay Dying Shadows Are SecurityAs I Lay Dying An Ocean Between UsBehemoth DemigodBehemoth The ApostasyBehemoth EvangelionBlessthefall His Last WalkBlessthefall BlessthefallBlue October FoiledBreaking Benjamin We Are Not AloneBullet For My Valentine The PoisonChaostar ChaostarChimaira ResurrectionChimaira The InfectionChimaira The Age of HellCradle of Filth MidianCradle of Filth Damnation and a DayCradle of Filth The Principle of Evil Made FleshCradle of Filth ThornographyCult of Luna The BeyondCult of Luna SalvationDark Fortress Stab WoundsDarkthrone Transilvanian HungerDepressed Mode ...For Death...Dimmu Borgir For all tidDimmu Borgir Stormblåst MMVDisturbed BelieveDisturbed Ten Thousand FistsDisturbed IndestructibleDraconian Dark Oceans We CryDraconian A Rose For The ApocalypseMusically, it sounds too much like Turning Season Within. I say corny because there's a difference between creating a beautiful or sorrowful image through lyrics and throwing material from what other bands have done at a wall and seeing what comes out. The synthesis is overused in a way that is unparalleled, the guitars are atrocious, the drums are the only highlight and are barely even that good, and nothing at all is done to be unique whatsoever. I've heard too much of what's on this album on other albums (done better then they are here) to be remotely impressed. You can pretty much match up any song on this album to one on Fallen (Tear The World Down>Whisper, Sleep Well My Angel>My Immortal, Bury Me Alive>Going Under, etc.). Besides that, the guitars are even worse (including a bass that you can barely hear), the drums that are well below average even for mainstream rock, the lyrics are still based on whiny relationship angst, the synth still sounds like an afterthought, and the only bright side is a somewhat gifted singer named Carly Smithson. This album is nothing new, is even worse then the album it's trying to emulate, and is truly disappointing. People have said, try not to see this as a Fallen twin. But if you listen to this album after having listened to Fallen you realize something: This isn't a Fallen twin.
