Alice in Chains The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here
Annie Lennox Bare
everything mr. pencils says and further. the emotion she fills her voice with sends shivers down my spine. annie lennox is one of the very few artists that can rightly call herself a godess. immensly touching album.
Apoptygma Berzerk Exit Popularity Contest
Guys, how could you miss this? Mostly instrumental but pretty good electronic music, very experimental after their more mainstream pop/rock/emo stuff lately. The exception with vocals, listen to this:rhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0MOwflQKVAr
Blue October Foiled
Brett Anderson Black Rainbows
David Bowie Heathen
David Bowie Hours
Dream Theater Awake
Faithless Reverence
Fish A Feast of Consequences
Fish is like a good wine, still get?s better as he ages. Better than Steven Wilson because he can create emotions and is a better storyteller (his voice is miles better too). Prog also for the heart and not only the head. Ambitious release.
How to Destroy Angels Welcome Oblivion
Ihsahn Eremita
In Mourning Monolith
In Mourning Need
Already shows some great potential. I hope this band will continue with many more albums, my favourite death/progressive band. Just beautiful great melodies. A touch of Alice in Chains in here.

this has a more ambient, soundtrack like feel to it with spoken words passages and soundlayers that just provide background for the mood at times. i like it, something different than your run of the mill future pop album.

Submotion Orchestra Finest Hour
Suede Bloodsports
The Smashing Pumpkins Oceania
The Walkabouts Nighttown
The Walkabouts is a Seattle-based band which enjoys a much bigger fan base in Europe than in the US. Band members are Chris Eckman and his brothers Curt and Grant along with singer Carla Torgerson.
Chris Eckman shares the vocal part with Torgerson. Eckman has a deep voice which isn´t too formidable but used effectively to set the tone - you could compare his voice with Nick Cave´s if you like. You could say that Eckman´s voice expresses despair whereas Torgerson rich, beautiful voice stands for hope. Both evoke frailty, bitterness and longing but with a glimpse of hope, positivity and compassion which does the trick for me.
The music is basically chamber pop with a slight folk element, beautiful strings arrangements and a noctural touch. The Tindersticks and Portishead come to mind.
The lyrics deal basically with the loneliness of people in a metroplis standing in one´s own light and the longing for happiness.
Just when things get too desperate there´s a subtle change in mood for some bittersweet moments of aspiration.
Standouts are pretty much every song on the first half of the cd. "Prayer for you" reminds me in it´s menacing intensity of "This is hardcore" by Pulp. In the second half the quality drops just an inch but is still good.
Overall i rate this a solid 4. I purchased this CD in 1997 and still enjoy it in the right mood.
Please consider that this is my first review and that english is not my native language.
I just thought it a shame that this band was not in the database so i upped it and came along with a review. |
