This has grown on my over the years; it's become one of those albums that I point to when someone asks what I like. I go "THISSSSSS. GET ME MORE LIKE THISSSS."
Big Wreck The Pleasure and the Greed
Big Wreck Albatross
I'll tell you why this album has Big Wreck on it and not Thornley. I dig most of the Thornley stuff, I really do; there's something to be said for a guy like Ian Thornley to try be simple. But Thornley songs tend to be like holiday relatives. It's great to see 'em once a year, but they wear out their welcome pretty fast. Big Wreck songs, though - *these* songs - don't do that. In fact, even though I liked the album immediately, I'm coming back to change my rating because these songs just get better and better with every listen. Even the straight up and down stuff like "Rest of the World" is somehow more lasting when given the Big Wreck treatment. If you've ever heard a song you liked by Big Wreck or Thornley, pick this one up.

I saw him in concert on the first tour he did when he got his new band together. You could
tell he was excited to be playing this stuff as a band because he pushed every song just a
little farther, made everything a little more raw and immediate. There was just so much
energy. I remember leaving that show wishing to the gods I had bootlegged it because not
only did he play most of my favorite songs from all over his catalog, because of the way
they were played they were my favorite version of all those songs. This album... is not
quite that. But it's pretty damn close, made all the more amazing that they achieved a sound
so full, rich, and complex in a single-tracked recording. If you dig Bazan at all, get this;
the full band version of "I Never Wanted You" is worth the price of admission all by itself.

Saw this band live before hearing them. The drummer's veracity pulled me in almost instantly. The album's not the best thing I've ever heard, but it's pretty damn solid, and I still find myself reaching for it every now and then.
