I am relatively new to this type of music. The first time I heard this record in full about 3 years ago. I had tried in years past to invest time and just sit down and listen to the album in full, to no avail. I was never able to make it all the way through. rIt took me all those years to finally do it. I dont know why It was so hard for me. There were tracks on this album I knew I liked instantly, because they were a bit more formulaic and the song progressions were easier to buy into. For example, "Wills Dissolve" is in my opinon the finest track on the record. The build up, the emotion, and the aura created throughout the song is eerie, yet comforting. The gnawing, grainy vocals pull you through the song like walking through quicksand. rI listened to the album in full about 10 times (excessive? maybe) before realizing what i was listening to. I was listening to the sounds of the elements. the sounds of the earth moving, wind piercing, fire charring, and water saturating my ears. The environment Isis creates is overflowing with nature and with depth, and it was right then when I realized: this is what this genre is to me. it is my interpretation of whatever post-metal, prog post metal, etc. is. It is a gutteral feeling of construction and destruction, and this album may be the finest, in any genre, i have ever heard. |

Minus the Bear Planet of Ice |
I will admit, I have this raging biased obsession with this band. If anyone has not heard Sharks Keep Moving at this point, it is the predecessor, for lack of a better term, of this band. I grew up listening to the post-hardcore and metalcore genre staples, and when I first heard Minus, I was instantly hit with a crazed, raging confused boner and I loved it. Highly Refined Pirates, as an album, is more innovative than many will ever know or recognize. Minus the Bear is in more ways than one, "unique". They fit the mold and have many elements of many arenas in music, but there is something subtle, comforting, and epic about minus. The way they construct songs, the tapping and keyboards, etc. the songs that have no other meaning than to talk about a setting in some far away land. And Planet of Ice is the culmination of inventiveness and genius for MTB. The album is good from front to back. Each song does in fact stand alone and can be listened to one at a time, singularly. rOne of my favorite bands, and favorite albums, and it will always remain so. |
