When I first heard of these guys I didn't really like them. Although now I have warmed to them and brought all their albums I still don't think that this is the best album they have produced. Sure, no two albums should sound the same but neither did they have to stray so far away from the epic sound they had achieved on their 2005 hit City of Evil. I do admire a band when they are willing to experiment with different styles and genres but as ambitious as this album is it seems to aim to hit many grounds in rock and metal making it feel all over the place.
It opens up with a gothic style organ on 'Critical Acclaim' followed by arpeggio guitar riffs. Simplistic in many ways but it's quiet effective, especially with the highly political war message convayed by M. Shadows' lyrics. Next is the more trash metal orientated anthem that is 'Almost Easy'. I'm sure Slash would deffinatly admire the guitars in this song. It's easy to see why this track is a fovorite amongst any Avenged Sevenfold fan.
'Scream' comes next. Although the bass line and industrial style drumimg gives it a lot of groove the guitars here feel a little too repetitive and fomulaic. Still, it's dark mood seems to fit well. 'Afterlife' really is one of their best songs and a major stand-out on this album. Rythematic guitars, melodramatic lyrics, wicked solos and string quadrents galore really prove the band's creativity and imagination. A shame for 'Gunslinger' which is very generic for a ballad. It really isn't the strongest track on the album and feels to messy for its own good.
'Unbound' is a fairly more prog. metal sounding track with it's slightly philosophical lyrics and hyperactive lyrics. Not so much as epic but it certainly stands out. Again taking a dark mood is 'Brompton Cocktail'. A good track, though it feels a little too short and the guitar solo feels quiet bizarre. Contrasting this would be 'Lost' with an overall sound that is discribed by Synyster Gates as feeling "poppy" and tending to "put you in a good place". A very fast-paced and entertaining burner although the auto-tune vocals might not be everybody's cup of tea.
More than enough imagination is present with their opus ballad 'A Little Piece of Heaven'. My feeling about this song are still quiet mixed with it's circus style intrumentals and Halloween mood making it a huge leap forward for these guys, especially when telling a morbid love story which was illustrated through their flash animation music video (which I personally didn't like). Although it's cartoony sound is still questionable I find it's guilty pleasure.
Closing this album is 'Dear God', a simply Cowboys from Hell style ballad. A fair closing for a somewhat underwhelleming album.
Overall, I found that the self-titled album was an entertaining enough album if by no means their strongest. While I do like the creative freedom that they've allowed themselves by flirting with other genres they may not have realised that it's easy to get lost in such freedom, even for an experimental album. With their new album coming out this year I'd like to see them experiment more but also give us more of the lightning paced punk feel from City of Evil.
