4.0 excellent
Mastodon Crack the Skye
Mastodon Leviathan
With their second full album, Mastodon offers us a real standout in the prog metal genre. Leviathan gives a taste of Mastodon's true achieved potential as a band. The opening track of "Blood and Thunder" is set aside from the rest of the album, however, not in a good way. I do not find this song as good as the rest of the album as a whole. "I am Ahab" gives us a very fast and energetic riff to applaud; but is far from the high point. The third track "Seabeast" is the front-runner for best song the album. "Seabeast" delivers a strong song throughout, plus a last-minute breakdown that hits the listener hard with an awe-inspiring sound. The fourth track "Island" delivers a very gritty riff that is not too strong but by no means weak. The fifth track "Iron Tusk" gives drummer Brann Dailor extended bragging rights with a well rounded double bass, and is backed by the signature gritty guitar sound noticed throughout the album. The sixth track "Megalodon" is a filler for the album with a forgettable riff and weak presence in comparison. The seventh track "Naked Burn" has a cool build-up and mid-segments, however, could use something more. The eighth track "Aqua Dementia" delivers some great vocals and changes pace several times. in the parts where the song gets melodic it almost sounds despairing; and the final minute of the song caps off with the sound of crashing waves. After my first listen of "Aqua Dementia" i noticed myself to be transfixed by how well put together it was. Then the transition to the 13-minute epic "Hearts Alive" begins. This song is our second in argument for the best song on this album. "Hearts Alive" demonstrates the true talent of Mastodon; and lacks nothing. In saying that, it may have given too much. "Hearts Alive" has some dragged out parts after its great build-up and sudden transition into the metal-esque area. The song is great overall, but if you cut out its longer segments, it can be more than great. The last track "Joseph Merrick" is a slow and quiet instrumental that gives a "calm after the storm." This instrumental is unique to the album, and Mastodon themselves. overall the album is an excellent compilation to showcase the true ability in todays prog metal; and Mastodon shows us why they are on top of that genre. The unique guitar grit and the snap of the snare showcase to the listener a little something more (and better) than todays prog metal scene.
