Portishead Third
Instead of trying to make another Dummy, Portishead branch out into unfamiliar territory, and the record is all the better for it. It's still got the trademark Portishead gloom, but there's so much more as well: the heartbreaking honesty of "Deep Water," the sensual hypnotism of "Nylon Smile," and the stark, brutal heaviness of "Machine Gun" all signify that Portishead is fucking back and better than ever before.

This is some of the most balls-out, fast-paced noise rock you'll ever hear, and it's from a drummer who straps the microphone directly to his mouth and a bass player who can wring more sound out his instrument than 6 guitarists all playing at the same time. It's almost impossible to avoid banging your head to songs like "Riffwraith" and "Megaghost," which see both members violently shredding eardrums with speed and volume. Songs like "Mohawkwindmill" and "Bizarro Bike" have a more jammy feel, and could rival any modern tech metal bands in terms of sheer brain-fuckery. If you like having your head beaten in at a thousand miles per hour, give this record a spin.

Venetian Snares Doll Doll Doll
One of the most violent and horrifying albums I've ever heard, Doll Doll Doll invites you into the mind of a child killer. Each song is filled to the brim with brain-melting breaks and disturbing samples guaranteed to make you squirm, and the icing on the cake is that each song packs more than just a high-bpm punch - they're also quite atmospheric. Frantic horns and sinister strings scream in and out of focus to great effect. To anyone who says that metal is the heaviest, darkest, most evil music out there, I recommend Doll Doll Doll.

Grizzly Bear Shields
Grizzly Bear really shot themselves in the collective foot by starting the album with their best track. The album's quality is like a bathtub, with the high points being at either end and the middle dragging along the bottom. When giving your listeners a break, it's good to make it brief before kicking things off again. Instead Grizzly bear decided that the break needed to be 5 tracks long, which really hurts replayability. With that said, there are still a few really excellent moments here, and it's definitely worth a listen. I wouldn't be surprised to see it on quite a few "Best of 2012" lists.

Sure, it's got "mallcore" written all over it. Sure, throwing 7 different genres into one song isn't new or difficult. And sure, Krysta's voice can be pretty grating sometimes. But overall, it's pretty good. Goofy self-deprecation, occasionally awesome songs, and enough sense to be short, sweet, and to the point. Not bad. Not bad at all.

The girls have some enunciation problems, the songs can get kind of samey, and they clearly haven't developed their musical talents quite yet. Even so, it really isn't as bad as the average score would have you believe. The songs are mostly silly little stories about culture and heritage and whatnot. Bad, but trust me, there is worse music out there.

Live albums are almost never worth the listen, and this one doesn't buck the trend. If you like indecipherable screams over bass so loud that it drowns out everything else, pick this up.
The Fall of Troy In the Unlikely Event
The Jesus and Mary Chain Psychocandy
Influence aside, Psychocandy is a genuinely bad album. Too lazily played to evoke any coherent feeling, too fuzzed out to articulate its melodies, and plagued by some truly inane lyrics ("I get ahead on my motorbike/I feel so quick in my leather boots/My mood is black when my jacket's on/And I'm in love with myself"), Psychocandy's only worth is that it inspired some of the greatest albums of all time (You're Living All Over Me, Loveless, etc.).
