The male vocals certainly leave something to be desired, but Alison nails it. This album is somber, focuses on loss and death but has so many high points a metal fan can enjoy it if they give it a few spins. Highly recommended.

The album is great. Taking his music in a new direction that feels fresh and different after Continuum, this album is the quintessential heartbreak handbook. The most upbeat songs are still about being alone or heartbreak, but they come together so eloquently and efficiently everything falls into place well. "Edge of Desire" is easily the best song followed closely about the life of a single guy in "Assassin." "Do You Know Me" is somewhat weak and "Who Says? is well, what it is. This album is fantastic though and with it all Mayer fans can expect a slew of improvised live opuses, even more new songs and John continuing to show us what it means to be a pop musician and keep his dignity.
Best songs: Edge of Desire, Assassin, Perfectly Lonely
Meh songs: Do you know me, Who Says? |
John Mayer Born and Raised
First off, yes it is better than Battle Studies. This album is right up there with the first three. Despite his vocal health problems, the vocals on this album sound excellent. Mayer has improved his voice tenfold as it no longer sounds so breathy and like a Dave Mathews rip off. Whiskeyx3 has a Continuum vibe to it and Walt Grace is a pleasent surprise. There might be a little filler but most of the tracks are pretty enjoyable and stand out. The biggest factor was mixing the country twang with his pop/blues sound and it came out perfect.

The album is everything you expect it to be, in a good way. It sounds more like the music style found in Watershed (you'll see what I mean) than Damnation but the album flows well and is best listened to back to back in one sitting. The songs do have strange interludes but overall if you like progressive music you'll enjoy this. For Opeth fans there are some faster tracks like Slither which remind you who you're listening to. The lyrics are nothing special but fit the structure well. I am really enjoying the album and look forward to hearing the songs live in the fall.
