4.0 excellent
Collective Soul Rabbit
Insisting that there must be a distinct resemblance between a new album and a band's earlier works in order for the new album to be considered a quality release is, in my experience is the quickest path to disappointment with any new album. Bands change line-ups, producers, labels and, frankly, get older, and their sound changes. To say that this album doesn't match Collective Soul (1995) in terms of quality and originality is stating the obvious, but how many bands release an album 15 years later that lives up to the album that made them famous? Especially bands with their origins in the '90s. Rabbit sounds like classic Collective Soul to me, and easily surpasses Afterwords in terms of energy and songwriting. "Understanding" is "legitimately awful?" Seriously? It sounds like a band having fun to me! The first time I heard it, and many times since, it unwittingly brought a smile to my face. "Hymn For My Father" is beautiful. "Dig" is electrifying. Ed Roland and company continue to impress. And by the way, I loved Blender.
