4.5 on initial listen and there's no way this is going to lose it's charm. This band manages consistency while still evolving. They push every element from the first album to the limit here and still manage to maintain focus. I've heard Submotion and The Cinematic Orchestra mentioned a lot together, and while I think they both do something very different, the goal they both achieve is quite similar; especially in that they manage to combine great melodies, harmonies, and hooks with complex rhythms, thick atmosphere, and varying tones. True to the former's namesake, both bands are also amazing at creating rich imagery. Submotion successfully takes the most complimentary elements of multiple genres and matches them perfectly to achieve not only an interesting and engaging sound, but to immerse you in extremely vivid soundscapes that can range from beautiful to eerie. There is no better example to this than Times Strange and Eyeline one after the other.

Their best work by far. Works very well as a record, but not very good for casual listening. It's still a bit too messy to be a classic, but the hooks and melodies are stronger and more distinct than they've ever been without losing the beautiful textures and atmosphere that frames them. If it had a few more strong tracks that stood out, it would be perfect. These guys definitely zeroed in on what works.

Misery Signals Absent Light
Misery Signals is certainly adapting to popular trends but they definitely maintain what made them unique; they masterfully release an album with both versatility and consistency in both atmosphere, and quality songwriting. You're going to find fast, "off timey" rhythms, dissonant melodies, soaring, catchy hooks. You'll also find driving punk beats, good old metal riffing, and bone crushing breakdowns. None of it however, gets in the way of the overall feel of the album. Misery Signals have managed to get a little more eccentric while maturing in amazing ways. I truly feel this is the metal album of the year that will please both longtime fans, newcomers, and past skeptics alike.

Sitting atop the dead throne of metalcore, TDWP is dominating the now established metalcore rsound with some more experience and maturity this time around. They have more restraint, ractually showing a whole song devoid of breakdowns, and are consistent from start to finish rwith a dark atmosphere, driving drum beats, and subtle transitions. As the for the rbreakdowns that ARE in fact present, -there are many of them- they do a better job at rmaintaining the melody of the song, and actually pushing forward, or acting as actual rtransitions rather than simple filler. The use of synth is the hugest improvement, the sharp rand swift use of string riffs still exist, but they are the only practice in excess left to rbe seen around it, as the synth has evolved into an excellent tool of atmosphere and rframework for the overall tone of the album. I know many people can't view them in any other rway, but TDWP are clearly growing up. Above all, this album is FUN enough to warrant a 3.5 ralone, the expansion in songwriting skill pushes it to a solid 3.8-4. rOh yeah, the guest vocals on Constance are earth shattering.
