4.0 excellent
Dream Theater Black Clouds and Silver Linings
While I've been meticulously listening the the DT discography for years now, I'm still a bit worried about this album. It feels too similar to SC, which is their obvious worst album IMO. With more listens I think this will subside, but the feelings are definitely reminiscent of "Ohhh, this is heavy! Yeah that's badass!" Too quickly did those thoughts vanish and were replaced with... "These are lame attempts at singles." Luckily that's where the similarities seem to end. BC&SL has but one "Single" in the form of Wither, and although I understand the apparent need for a slower ballad, it just seems lame. The remainder of the album however is a wonderful showcase of both their ridiculous musical talent, and ability to write epic musical joureys for those patient enough to sit through them. The Shattered Fortress is easily my favorite; finally ending Mike's 12 Step Suite. I actually play that as a full album more times then the new album itself. ;)
I think in time it may rate a 4.5, but it is impossible to put this against Scenes, Six Degrees, or Images (all 5s IMO).
Also I've been playing Mike's songs on drums for years, and I don't feel any of these songs screaming "PLAY ME" like Home, or Strange Deja Vu. A Nightmare to Remember will probably be the only one I learn, but I doubt it will be with the same tenacity as Honor Thy Father.
DT Forever!
