There is a spiritual quality to his writing and melody that feels so unpretentious and accepting of his awkwardness in the world. Then the weeping guitar comes in and just brings it to a whole new level of beauty. I've read some bad reviews for this album and the most common negative thing I've read is that they have slowed down and sound more like the aging rockers they are. But I don't agree. To me, they just sound comfortable doing what they do best and they somehow pump even a down tempo song full of emotion and feeling. Is it as good as Beyond? Time will tell. But it's definitely a different kind of album. Beyond stood out in a sea of "flavor of the month"bands and proclaimed DJ's rightful place in the crowded indie pecking order. Beyond is the album they had to make. But I think Farm is the album they wanted to make... more varied, more sprawling, more feeling, more Dinosaur Jr.! Yes. More Dinosaur Jr.!
