Blood Mountain is an energetic album with a real vibe. Way beyond average in many ways and even quite clever - with plenty of dynamics and some interesting noodling, it shouldn't bore the listener for many listens, but after a while, it becomes apparent that the whole album is a case of "style over substance" and after a year or so of owning the album, it begins to get a bit tiresome to listen to. All of the improvisations do nothing for songs that are written and performed by a band with a monotonous singer and a wreckless drummer. If the drummer would take more care and if the singing wasn't so echoey and intoxicated, I might like the album a whole lot more. That, and the fact that the lead guitar set-up is particularly weedy. The production sounds very thin and it detracts from the atmosphere of the tunes.
- A highly ambitious album, with song structures that have good potential, but the production is too raw for an album that cries out for decent soundscaping, considering the dream-like qualities that some of the songs on Blood Mountain have. |
