Daughters Daughters
Alright this still fucking rules
Do Make Say Think You, You're a History in Rust
Ethereal Shroud Trisagion
I feel very strongly about this record and it?s made me feel more things from a black metal album that I?ve felt in years. Dude is a certified talent who understands the genre in a way few do. Brilliant, evocative, unyielding?do yourself a favor and check this out when you can.
Every Time I Die New Junk Aesthetic
Fiona Apple The Idler Wheel...
Gorguts From Wisdom to Hate
Gorguts Colored Sands
Hop Along Get Disowned
Interpol Turn on the Bright Lights
Japanese Breakfast Jubilee
This is sublime
Kayo Dot Gamma Knife
The addition of metal influences is certainly welcome, but as tradition, Kayo Dot can't make a consistent album to save their lives, even with a 32 minute runtime.
Lana Del Rey Norman Fucking Rockwell!
Am I the only one who thinks that it’s weird this is the first album of hers to have a song called “California”?
Laura Stevenson Wheel

Orchid Orchid
Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here
Radiohead In Rainbows
Radiohead OKNOTOK 1997-2017

The Mars Volta Frances the Mute

4.2 excellent
American Football American Football
Blood Cultures Happy Birthday
Your barber sounds cooler than you
Cormorant Diaspora
Cormorant have checked my pretentious cynicism with an album I love, full of things I typically hate. Predictably awesome and a definite contender for one of the best metal records of the year.
Deathspell Omega Paracletus
Godspeed You! Black Emperor 'Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend!
Howls of Ebb The Marrow Veil
Howls of Ebb Cursus Impasse: The Pendlomic Vows
If you have enjoyed this band in the past (which you should, as they're one of the most fascinating death metal acts currently making music) then you'll find a lot to love here. Their second record takes the infernal psychedlia of "The Marrow Veil" and packages it in a manner more like their debut, with palatable songs and more standard structure. It's a tightened and condensed version of last years EP, albeit without the boundary pushing presentation. Still, it's an excellent slab of death metal that everyone, especially fans, should check out.
Imperial Triumphant Abyssal Gods
Kayo Dot Hubardo
By all rights a massive, sprawling modern Kayo Dot album should fail but Hubardo aims high and succeeds in every respect. An awe inspiring achievement.
Krallice Go Be Forgotten
Krallice's messiest and most flawed release to date may also be their best.
Miley Cyrus Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz
I don?t care, this is one of my favorites from the last decade.
Mono You Are There
Rebel Wizard Voluptuous Worship of Rapture and Response
Shugo Tokumaru In Focus?
This guy cannot make bad music.
Sigur Ros ( )
In regards to Sigur Ros albums, this is beyond a doubt the most over hyped. However, it is still an incredible experience nontheless.
Sigur Ros Kveikur
Of fucking course I love this.
Streetlight Manifesto The Hands That Thieve
If Anne Frank were still alive she'd probably 5 this.
Tim Hecker Virgins
It's okay I guess...

4.1 excellent
Afterbirth The Time Traveler's Dilemma
Boris Präparat
Kidcrash Jokes
This is on Spotify now and it?s still really good.

2021 update: yeah this is still great
Laura Stevenson The Big Freeze
“Baby Bones” but 30 minutes long.
Leviathan Scar Sighted
The first great Leviathan record has finally arrived.
Mogwai Mr. Beast
Mono Walking Cloud and Deep Red Sky, Flag Fluttered and the Sun Shined
Sigur Ros Takk...
Ulver ATGCLVLSSCAP

4.0 excellent
0 (Null) Entity
Icelandic BM is bland and samey but this doom heavy take with dashes of emo sorta reminds me of the Pax Cecilia in some very minor ways
A Bunny's Caravan Draining Puddles, Retrieving Treasures
A Perfect Circle Thirteenth Step
Ad Nauseam Imperative Imperceptible Impulse
So this Gorguts rip off band got really good.
American Football American Football (LP2)
Average for this sucks.
American Football American Football (LP3)
This could never have lived up to my hype but it is still wonderful in its own right.
Ampere All Our Tomorrows End Today
Anna von Hausswolff All Thoughts Fly
Anoice Remmings
Ariana Grande Dangerous Woman
Ariana Grande Thank U, Next
Arnaut Pavle Transylvanian Glare
Artificial Brain Labyrinth Constellation
Artificial Brain Infrared Horizon
While there are some moments that literally seem copy/pasted from their debut, there's enough twists ("Static rShattering" could be a Krallice song) to make it interesting enough to stand on its own. It's a darker and heavier ralbum but still a lot of fun.
As Cities Burn Come Now Sleep
Ash Borer Ash Borer
At the Drive-In In/Casino/Out
bansheebeat Spiral Power
Bedsore Hypnagogic Hallucinations
Unique and pretty. Reminds me of Morbus Chron I think.
Beirut Lon Gisland
Beyonce Beyonce
Like JT's 20/20 Experience, Beyonce is a massive, excessive pop album that hits all the right notes and offers some of the catchiest and most smartly written tunes of the year.

Toby Driver They Are the Shield
I love nothing more than shitting on Tony Driver. For years we have had to deal with the stuffy and ostentatious ruination of Kayo Dot, as well as the adandonment motW and it really gets me going to point all of this out. HOWEVER, this album is just lovely. It?s beautiful and evocative while being surprisingly understated (in a way we are not accustomed from Driver). Best yet, it takes everything he?s done right in the last several years while getting rid of everything he has not.

Typically the cynic when it comes to trendy metal like this but this is great.
Horrendous Anareta
It's like "Ecdysis" but a little more melodic and flashy.
Insomnium Winter's Gate
Never cared too much for Insomnium (or melodeath in general) but this was a hell of a great listening experience. rI've always scoffed at the great heights of their albums and passed them off as typical Finnish melodrama. But rhere there is a lot of intelligent restraint and admirable maturity. It's a 40 minute nonstop track but there's an rimmense amount of content that spans a lot of styles. It's really theatrical and dramatic death metal that's often rtimes staggeringly beautiful.r3.7

SUMAC Love In Shadow
While a lot of content could have been trimmed (that last 10 minutes of The Task for example), Sumac have done
a 180 and made an unexpectedly nuanced record. Compared to the oppressive density of “What One Becomes”
or the never-ending-noise that was their collab with Keiji Haino, “Love in Shadow” comes off as a light, and
almost melodious affair.

Mare Cognitum Luminiferous Aether
I've come to hate "atmospheric black metal" since it's all made of the same husk but with different padding. Mare Cognitum always impresses with a great understanding of what makes the subgenre work. He's always showing a surprising amount of restraint that--even when a song is stretching past the 12-minute mark--makes the piece feel like a logical whole made up of necessary parts. Luminiferous Aether is solid, modern atmospheric black metal from one hell of a savvy musician.
Mare Cognitum Solar Paroxysm

3.4 great
Acephalix Decreation
Bloodbath The Arrow of Satan Is Drawn
Brand New Science Fiction
As someone with no emotional/nostalgia attachment to this band I have to say that this is a really good rock album.
Circa Survive The Amulet
Cirith Ungol Forever Black
Everything about this: the production, song structure, lyrical content, album cover, etc. is so old school in the most feel-good way.
Corpsessed Impetus of Death
Cradle of Filth Cryptoriana – The Seductiveness of Decay
After making fun of this band for years without every actually listening to them I have to say I had fun. Kinda silly and dramatic but a lot more fun than it has any right to be. Reminds me of Sigh I suppose.
Eternal Valley Ascend To The Unknown
I usually avoid anything tagged "atmospheric black metal" because it's the same regurgitated shit over and over again. This isn't really any different, but it hits a real sweet spot sounding decidedly modern yet steeped in retro synths and production. Worth checking out.
Phrenelith Desolate Endscape
Pilgrim II: Void Worship
Sielunvihollinen Ruhonkantaja
Some of the deepest cutting, yet melodic, bm all year
Triumvir Foul Triumvir Foul

3.3 great
Acid Witch Evil Sound Screamers
Aenaon Extance
Between the Buried and Me Colors
So idk this hasnt aged too poorly or maybe I?m just feeling nostalgia
Blut Aus Nord Deus Salutis Meae
Darker and weirder; more in line with the Odinist than anything else. Sounds distantly related to Deathspell Omega I guess. Basically, Saturnian Poetry this isn't.
Decapitated Anticult
Better than it has any right to be given that the band has only released one good album (and that was like 15 years ago). Also the title, cover, and lyrical content are dumb. Still it's a good enough time.
Ingurgitating Oblivion Continuum Of Absence
Janelle Monae The Electric Lady
ROBOT LOVE IS QUEER
Lubbert Das Deluge
Manchester Orchestra A Black Mile to the Surface
I'm not a big Manchester Orchestra fan but "The Gold" was/is a 5/5 song for me and "The Alien" was
pretty cool too so I was pumped for this. Well it's mostly a snooze-fest and I should have checked
my enthusiasm. "The Wolf," "Lead, SD," "The Mistake," and "The Silence" are all really forgettable
which is too bad because ~aesthetically~ this is the most interesting and distinctive the band has
ever sounded. "The Parts" could easily be a Right Away, Great Captain! song so that's great I
suppose.
Mogwai Rock Action
Neurosis Fires Within Fires
Classic, by the numbers Neurosis but not in the way that made "Honor Found in Decay" so lame.
Obliteration Cenotaph Obscure
Summoning With Doom We Come

Cattle Decapitation The Anthropocene Extinction
Jute Gyte Oviri
It's like that moment at a buffet where you crossed the line and you're too full to finish what's on your plate. That's how I feel about Jute Gyte--after years of feasting on insane proclivity I think I am nearing my satiety. "Oviri" is different enough to be satisfying but not that satisfying.

Circa Survive Descensus
Coheed and Cambria No World for Tomorrow
Coheed and Cambria Year of the Black Rainbow
People need to stop saying Chris Pennie is this band's saving grace. It's ridiculous. The drumming is noticeably better, no more, no less. It takes away from the band and all of their accomplishments stop being tools.

Solid album, very accessible. Really didn't care for NMFT but this is really great.
Coheed and Cambria The Afterman: Ascension
okay this isn't that good.
Coldplay Ghost Stories
Cryptopsy Cryptopsy
Cult of Luna Vertikal

Miley Cyrus Younger Now
I wanted to love this more but it loses steam half way through. Once you get to "Thinkin'" the album goes from "pretty great" to "pretty dull." Oh well at least the singles are good.
Mono For My Parents
If I had to pick one band that is doing the least in progressing the genre, it would be a close race between rExplosions in the Sky and Mono. But what Mono lacks in originality (this is the exact same album they've rreleased over and over again) they make up for with their dramatic and emotive delivery. Bland, uninspired, rand derivative, "For My Parents" isn't going to change anyone's opinions on this band, but am I a sucker for rdem climaxes.
Mono Pilgrimage Of The Soul
Maybe it?s because Mono have been so dull for so long, but this kinda slaps.
Mors Principium Est Dawn of the 5th Era
Neurosis Honor Found in Decay
To no one's surprise, Neurosis make a damn great record. While not quite to the level of their last several "classics," Honor Found in Decay sits proudly within their discography as a truly solid piece of work.
Neutral Milk Hotel In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
Nine Inch Nails Pretty Hate Machine
Nine Inch Nails With Teeth
Obituary Obituary
The best Obituary album since the early 90s but to be honest that's a low bar to clear.
Obscura Akróasis
Not a fan of hyper clean tech death but for some reason this is fun to throw on in the background. Okay stuff.
Opeth Sorceress
Pelican Ephemeral
Pelican Ataraxia/Taraxis
Pelican pretty much needed this not to suck, and thankfully it doesn't
Pestilence Hadeon
Over-simplified songwriting belies a profound understanding of how death metal can be both fun and catchy while still convincingly heavy.
Profetus As All Seasons Die
Radiohead Amnesiac
Radiohead Pablo Honey
Radiohead Hail to the Thief
Revocation Deathless
Russian Circles Guidance
I should dislike this more than I do but the time I've spent with it has been lovely
Sadistic Ritual The Enigma, Boundless

Sargeist Feeding the Crawling Shadows
Seiko Oomori Kintsugi
The songs that don?t sound like an anime montage are pretty great.

Retro Swedish death by way of American armatures in 2016. Well done and pretty endearing but I'm sure I won't remember it come next month
Shadow Of Intent Reclaimer
Sigur Ros Von
Sigur Ros Valtari
Largely feels like 80 minutes of filler....which is weird because the album isn't even that long.
Sunless Urraca
Prolly would have been more impressive five years ago before this style became so overharvested. Still it's uncommonly good for a generic bandcamp release.
Svart Crown Abreaction
100% agree with Willie.
Taake Stridens hus
Thaetas Shrines to Absurdity
The 1975 A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships
The Dear Hunter Migrant

The Fall of Troy Manipulator
The Hotelier Home, Like NoPlace Is There
It's like if ten years ago a band got into a car accident and fell into a coma only to wake up thinking that it was still 2005.
Thou The House Primordial
Thrice The Artist in the Ambulance
Thrice Horizons/East
It?s like the last decade of Thrice never happened, and that?s a very good thing.
Touche Amore Parting The Sea Between Brightness And Me
It's more melodic and easily more poetic, but it lacks the overall energy that was so palpable on their 2009 effort. Parting the Sea Between Brightness and Me is a great record that plays up the band's strengths, but after awhile it all begins to feel a bit 'samey,' and regretfully uninspired.
Uada Djinn
This is fucking goofy.
Vanhelgd Temple of Phobos
This is p good.
Vermin Womb Decline
Loud and fast music with a grimy production. Would be cool if you hadn't heard 1000 incarnations of this band already.
Vildhjarta Måsstaden Under Vatten
If you?re a fan of shitting your pants, you?re gonna love track 8.
Wolves in the Throne Room Celestial Lineage
Wolves in the Throne Room Celestite
Woman Is The Earth Torch of Our Final Night
World's End Girlfriend Last Waltz
Xasthur Nocturnal Poisoning
Yhdarl Loss
Zhrine Unortheta
This year's most derivative metal record is also the most instantly gratifying. Pretty easy to spin and enjoy in any mood or scenario.

Bell Witch Mirror Reaper
Between the Buried and Me Automata I
The closest I have come to caring about a BTBAM album since that EP seven years ago (brevity suits this exhausting band). However, I do miss the days when the were a smart metalcore band rather than a dumb progressive one.

Protest the Hero Scurrilous
Oh baby I tried, hell, I even lied to myself by giving this a higher rating. Regardless, this is not the band I fell in love with on Kezia, nor is it the mature, refined group of young men I admired on Fortress. They stripped away everything that made them such an intelligent and fun band, and instead created a vapid, uninteresting album full of terrible, terrible lyrics, and copy/pasted pieces from their other works. Scurrilous is boring, poorly thought out, and carelessly written; the definition of a disappointment.
Radiohead The King of Limbs
Radiohead A Moon Shaped Pool
It's the Radiohead album I thought I always wanted until I got it.
Revocation Great Is Our Sin
Rivers of Nihil Where Owls Know My Name
Didn’t see what all the hype was about until the cleans came in at “A Home” then I remembered how basic you all

Sufjan Stevens The Ascension

Sun Kil Moon Benji
Sundr Solar Ships
There is a time in my life where I probably would have really dug this. That time has since passed.
Swans Leaving Meaning
In 2017 we were left with the tantalizing prospect of ?Swans 3.0.? Leaving Meaning, though, feels very ?2010s Swans? albeit with less teeth. Songs like ?What is this?? are some of the most beautiful in their discography, but the more plodding and languid stretches of post-post-punk freak-folk hypnosis had me reaching for the skip button.

Dodecahedron Kwintessens
Loud and dark death metal with some black sensibilities. In the five years since their debut this Deathspell fellating style as proliferates the scene; an indulgent sound that's caused eye rolls amongst even the most devout fans. It's still a fine album but is it fine enough to standout amongst the bustling crowd, especially when others do it much better? Probably not.

Arcade Fire Everything Now
Archspire Relentless Mutation
There's so much about this to like: the production, the vocals, the exciting variation, etc. But I'm exhausted two songs in, much like their last album. It's an exercise in how much the listener can handle and I guess just fail.
Avichi Catharsis Absolute

Suffocation …Of the Dark Light

The Contortionist Clairvoyant
Gave this an honest shot but it's sorta lame. Like, not offensively bad but just really, really, really lame in a Steven Wilson sort of "I like prog and have owned a fedora before" kind of way.

Passion Pit Kindred

Pissgrave Suicide Euphoria
Without the shocking name and cover art this album is an embarrassingly transparent and juvenile attempt at "raw" and "brutal" death metal. I'm sure some people will eat up the blatant perversion that the band employs but they're really just a bunch of guys trying too hard.

2.1 poor

Coheed and Cambria Vaxis II: A Window of the Waking Mind
Holy shit.
Contrarian Their Worm Never Dies
This isn?t really good. If you like ?crazy? metal for the sake of craziness then it may have merit, but subjectively it?s mushy, samey noodling (with an objectively stupid title)
Harakiri for the Sky Arson
2018?s first bad album comes in the form of a black metal record with sadistically long songs that sound like a never ending stream of August Burns Red hooks and choruses.
Justin Timberlake Man of the Woods
Katy Perry Witness
La Dispute Somewhere at the Bottom... (10th Anniversary)
God I?m getting old
Limp Bizkit Still Sucks

Manchester Orchestra The Million Masks of God

Marduk Frontschwein
Mastery Valis
Meshuggah The Violent Sleep Of Reason
It's hard defending Meshuggah half the time becuase so many of their attributes are almost objectively bad. For those who enjoy them, like me, it's easy to look past the inherent monotony of their music. There's a meditative property to their swirling madness that makes it worth it. "Koloss" traded this in for tighter songwriting whereas "Catch Thirty-three" wholly embraced it. "Obzen" blended both sides to near perfection.r"The Violent Sleep of Reason," however, is the worst parts of Meshuggah in album form. It's boring. It's homogeneous. It's uneventful. After a week of listening only "MonstroCity" stands out, and that's only because it has the dumbest song title I've ever heard.rDisappointing but not surprisingly so. Meshuggah has always been this lame but they have always made up for it with a smooth and cool sound. Here it's just not enough.
Mogwai Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait OST
Mount Eerie A Crow Looked At Me
Paramore Paramore
An album so bad that Adam Downer will declare it an avant garde pop masterpiece.
Protest the Hero Volition
How many sweeps and lame lines of Rody's power metal vocals will it take for me to finally give up on this band? As the years pass the more it becomes apparent that Kezia was a fluke.
Steven Wilson To the Bone
God this is so lame.
Thank You Scientist Stranger Heads Prevail

The Dear Hunter Act V: Hymns with the Devil in Confessional

The National Sleep Well Beast
Stunning. Jaw to the floor. Absolutely in awe of how fucking boring this band is. If I had known that a beard and a
