| The new vocalist is fine and I sincerely hope they discover a sound that benefits their new composition. Unfortunately, all of the songs blend together. This is most likely due to the fact that the album is composed of multiple EPs, released at different stages. As an entire album, it's too much and while none of the songs are bad, there isn't a single song that stands out as being better than average. Regardless, it's important to recognize that this isn't the HLH that we've grown to love, but the potential still exists. |

| Dead American New Nostalgia |
As a personal fan of Saosin's self-titled album and underdog stories, I'm glad that Cove has made
his return and I'm honestly rooting for him. However, New Nostalgia is a good album for what it
offers, but nothing more. The primary issue that I have with the album is that Cove is featured
high in the mix. Unfortunately, his voice isn't great and his lyrics are mediocre at best, which
has a tendency to bring the album down. This could have easily been addressed during production or
while deciding who to feature within each track. Cove has many strengths, but his weaknesses were
weighted equally in the song structures and mixing. Additionally, the band members fail to
distinguish themselves from Saosin's familiar style and flair, rarely offering new ideas or
soundscapes. In short, if any song from New Nostalgia appeared in a shuffled playlist, I wouldn't
press the skip button, however, there isn't a single song on the album that inspires me to return
for a repeat listen. Ultimately, New Nostalgia is a missed opportunity by Dead American to make a
profound statement, or differentiate themselves from their contemporaries. |
