5.0 classic
Martin Grech Open Heart Zoo
One of the best debut albums I've ever heard. End of story
Opeth Blackwater Park
Not even gonna bother explaining why this album is classic. If you enjoy progressive death metal then you probably already have this and know how awesome it is. If you're new to Opeth (really?) then this should be your starting point.

4.5 superb
Agalloch Pale Folklore
Absolutely stunning! This is the type of music I have always yearned for. The despair of black metal, the atmosphere of doom, the beautiful use of acoustics and instrumental passages, terrific lyrics. It may not be technically amazing but the songwriting is magnificently done and that will always be the defining factor that makes this one of the best bands in the world. 'She Paints Fire Across The Skyline' is one of the most epic pieces of music I have ever heard. Everytime I listen to it I get a different picture and story painted in my head. That alone should be testament to how great this band is.
Hurt Vol. 1
ISIS Panopticon
Heard a lot about this band and finally decided to check it out. Took a while to grow on me but man! This is some awsome shit. The instrumentation is superb and the way the music weaves in and out from heavy to hypnotic moments is mesmerizing. Flawless music if given the chance to plant its seed in your puny human brain. The only downside I found was that the vocals lack any 'punch', which is understandable since the tone of the guitars are so heavy and due to all the different layers going on but still.. The vocals don't do anything noteworthy and will hopefully be improved to add more to the music in future releases. Can't wait to check the new album out!
Primordial To the Nameless Dead
Solstafir Masterpiece of Bitterness

4.0 excellent
Anathema Hindsight
This was the first album I heard from this band and I must say I was completely blown away by sheer emotion and quality musicianship showcased. After this album I tracked down some of their previous albums and can safely say that these "acoustic" reworkings of some their best songs beats most of the original versions. It may be a tad depressing for happy people but gloomy souls such as myself will find this album a suprisingly moving, laidback and emotional experience.
Disillusion Back to Times of Splendor
Not quite as spectacular as many would have you believe but a superb effort nonetheless with plenty of shining highlights throughout its 6 songs. The only problem I have with this is the vocals, which not only sound odd at times, but also way too similar to the guy from System of a Down. The lyrics and overall musicianship is terrific though.
Gigantic Brain The Invasion Discography
Hurt Vol. II
Ikuinen Kaamos Closure
Wolves in the Throne Room Two Hunters
Didn't think this was that great at first but then again I was just starting to get into Cascadian Black Metal and did not really understand it fully yet. This is WITTR's best album to me, extremely atmospheric with a natural production that stays with you after repeated listens. The album is strong from start to finish throughout its 4 songs but the higlight is undoubtly the last song, an epic that will stand the test of time as one of the best atmospheric black metal songs ever.

3.5 great
Bleed the Sky Paradigm In Entropy
Disbelief Navigator
Katatonia The Great Cold Distance
Aaah, depressive music always makes me so warm and fuzzy inside for some reason. This was the first album I got from Katatonia. At first I was slightly dissapointed but the album started growing on me after a while and since then I haven't looked back and got all of their albums. What makes this album so great is the killer production of all the instruments, most noticably the cold surreal sound of the vocals and the jagged guitars. The cold bleak atmosphere of the album came out sounding just as planned with the production and makes this album stand out among their other releases. Although some of the song do get a bit repetitive after a while, this is still a great album that ranks among their best, which is pretty much most of what they have done to be honest. Definately way better than most of the rock/metal bands in existence today. Newcomers to the band should rather check out 'Viva Emptiness' before this release.
Samael Above
A surprising release this is. I loved Passage but everything else by this band has been quite meh with the exception of a few songs of their other albums. This album though, is quite a departure and serves up some really enjoyable blackened industrial metal. The production is slick as hell and while the vocals are still heavily processed with effects, I found it to be alot better than on Eternal and Reign of Light. Just as I was about to write this band off as crap they come out with this little bombshell of an album! Let's hope they continue in the same vein with future releases.
