The National Alligator
Why The National is so great Part 1: Matt Berninger could quite possibly be the greatest lyricist of all time. Its not that his lyrics are cryptic, or have a great amount of depth, its that they do, in a completely different sense. His lyrics, throughout each album are poignant, stream of consciousness like, and monologue(istic), and somehow posses the depth to cater to all of our emotions and to different circumstances. Whats even more remarkable, and part of the reason Berninger never prints his lyrics, is that his mumbling, world-weary tone has the tendency to produce phrases which are often misheard or misinterpreted, but still manage to be just as affecting. And this is why, in my opinion, Berninger is perhaps the most inventive and best lyricist around today, and if not all time. Oh, and the rest of the bands great too.
The National Boxer
Why The National is so great Part 2: The way the nationals discography is structured into a cohesive whole representing what its like to be human, to feel misery, sorrow, to love, to feel a stalker, to obsess over someone, to feel lonely and whatever other melancholy emotion you can think of, but also as lame as it sounds, each album actually sounds like growing up. Another thing is the slow-burning nature of each album, it may be a bit different at first, but youll soon warm to it and once you fully realise you love it, you wont even think about not giving it a 5/5.
The National High Violet
Why The National is so great Part 3: The actual sound of the National firstly is one that is so different, so indie, but so inviting and enjoyable. The national have the capacity to create a dichotomy between Berringers baritone and the light, airy guitars, complemented by the remarkable drumming that can be found on any National song. The National also compose songs in which every little element of their sound is so well thought out, so neatly placed, that is a wonder to think that such a band could create such things, but here they are, 10 or 11 songs on a disc, the equivalent of a symphony orchestra.

Ben Howard I Forget Where We Were
It's strange to see an artist progress so perfectly between albums. Hpward's sophomore is just ... neat. Here I see music becoming art; while Every Kingdom was a decent collection of songs, this effort seems to say more and expresses more. It's like the music is the means, rather than the end. If End of the Affair isn't considered as a possible song of the year I don't want to be a music critic anymore.

Dance Gavin Dance Happiness
I've never seen an album cover that perfectly depicts what it feels like listening to an album. Its cute, weird, sexy, daring and yes, has the capacity to make you feel, well, happy. This record really belongs to Will Swan, his screams are a huge step forward from the raspy screams (Jon Mess) heard on previous records, but its his guitarwork that continues to impress. It manages to merge technicality with guitar effect prowess that could rival Minus the bears (yes, i just said that). Amazing record.

Elora Danan In The Room Up There
Elora Danan, manage to write a record that reeks with technical progression and ambience without it becoming overbearing or too ambitious. The guitars seem to float on endlessly around a tight rhythm section which allows the band to create some really interesting and unique soundscapes. Each song has the feeling it could go on forever and that wouldn't be such a bad thing. A new riff is brought in, vocalist george green does something different with each new section, it just works.

Jhene Aiko Trip
Aiko's drug opus circuits expressions of pain, joy, love, euphoria, horror and fantasy while being consistently compelling and sonically fresh. Taking into account its contextual inferences (namely the death of Aiko's brother and the raising of daughter, Namiko), Trip has a heightened polish that synchronises Aiko's realities and fantasies with ease. The gaiety of 'While We're Young' and 'Sing to Me' are often paralleled by the grimly indulgent 'Overstimulated' and 'Bad Trip.' The breadth of emotional terrain on this record is a feat in itself and it's all the better funnelled through it's hypnotic production. Recommended.

Every progression, riff and fill is seamlessly blended together over Controller's 10 tracks to create one of the genres heaviest, meatiest and downright impressive releases. Finally, a metalcore band who gets it right.
Paramore Brand New Eyes
Parkway Drive Killing With A Smile
Psychedelic Porn Crumpets High Visceral Pt. 1
Audacious, brazen, spirited. High Visceral is a celebration of the hostility of youth, the joys of post adolescence
world trumping and the fun in just not giving a fuck. There are too many highlights to count, and these boys
have a deft hand for touch even amidst all the balls to the walls fuzz riffin that happens basically on every
track. I really enjoyed the call back Nirvana drumming on 'Cubensis Lenses', the all out psych jam at the back
of 'found god in a tomato' and the impressive blues riff at the start of 'Surf's Up'. Basically the love child of
Closure in Moscow and Tame Impala.

Submotion Orchestra Finest Hour
SZA Z
Really surprised by the low ratings for this. Both smoothly palatable and lyrically challenging, 'Z' is a wonder of haze and cast-out childhood memories. Rowe's melodies rarely ever fall flat, and her lyrics are oft-times cutting and intimidating ('I can't remember the last time I took love from anyone called daddy / who's got one anyway? / Not me) SZA, like the best of vocalists, is easily distinguishable with her voice, and pitchfork's remark of a lack of personality is really, really off the mark. Also love how songs split into whole other jams at their former's conclusion. Just impressive all around.

If 'London' sounds familiar, it's because it should. BANKS gorges on the crystal-production, minor-key flourishes and haunting bass lines that has become a bit of a zeitgeist for this decades R&B. It's morally heavy, it's weighted, it's that blurred dnm talk post inebriation. This is what herion-chic actually sounds like. And it sounds bloody good.

Blood Orange Cupid Deluxe
Sure, we've seen this stylistic refurbishment of 80s tropes in other art before (think:
Drive, GTA Vice City, M83). But Cupid Deluxe is an album that takes these styles and blends
in them into something more with an identity - or rather, Blood Orange's identity. Here
slightly distorted guitars sparkle through out, but never outstay their welcome; sax solos
are often the go to refrain for a lot of songs, and the synths are used to great effect
(listen to the dark opening to 'High Street'). A very well polished album.

Break Even The Bright Side
while i dont think break even are a truly talented band, this record is really, really good. 'The Bright Side' is full of purpose, grit, sincercity, honesty and above all, it has alot of heart. It stands as a work from a group muscians who whilst honouring their late friend, manage to couple purpose and hope effectivly into a neat 12 tracks.

CHVRCHES The Bones of What You Believe
Call back 80s synth pop that has a lot of character and depth to it. Not a song is skippable. 'Science/Visions' sounds like it would fit in nicely on the 'Night at the Roxbury' soundtrack. 'Tether''s alternating sides are also a highlight (a beautiful reverb-tinged chord pattern diving into an epileptic synth jam). Lauren Mayberry is also a delight - aggressive in her lyrics, but innocent in her delivery. Absolute gem.

Coheed and Cambria In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3
Coheed and Cambria Neverender
Well, you certainly can?t fault Coheed on their ambition. 4 concept albums played over 4 nights, all wrapped up in a narrative that is the Amory Wars in front of thousands of die-hard Coheed fans? This is some serious stuff, and is done justice by an extremely well executed live DVD. The un-dubbed sound is perfectly reciprocated from the live setting, the camera shots varied and focused, and the show itself? Awe-inspiring. Coheed truly out-do themselves here, perfectly notching themselves into a league of their own prog-rock-concept driven-live-opus. Epic.

DIIV Oshin
Like slow dancing in a diner from a Coppola movie (Sofia that is). It's all aesthetics. The mastering is great - its sequencing from track to track allows it's "background-ness" to further enhance its dreaminess. This has always been dream-pop's intent and if Beach House hadn't already mastered it I'd say we'd have a new heir to the throne. The albums crowning achievement however is it's ability to make guitar relevant again- its hooks are purely guitar based, all plucky and echoed. Would definitely recommend to intense dream-pop fans.
Drake Take Care
Drake Views
An argument could be made that Views is simply retreading old ideas, and it'd be hard not to - after all Drake is an extremely prolific artist. But Views to me seems more along the lines of muscling out his niche sound, and at over 80 minutes it's kinda of impressive how it does so. Here Drake extends and even liberates the throes of his sound - his embarrassing self-abasement, faux-braggadocio and notoriety for really poor lines. Does Drake really have anything important to say? Probably not. But the magnetism of celebrity successfully pervades this record so much that, along with those gorgeous beats, its too fascinating not to listen.

Fleet Foxes Helplessness Blues
Fleet Foxes beautifully paint Yeats' 'Lake Of Innisfree' in musical form, with the same simple yearning for a simple life in a natural sanctuary transposed expertly into Peckner's words. The album wonderfully rolls from one highlight to another; the screamed frustration of 'The Shrine/ An Argument' to the saxophone of that same song, all backed by the wonderful arrangements in vocal harmonies and gentle picked acoustics. For an album completely removed from its context, Fleet Foxes somehow construct the folk album of 2011.

Building upon an improved misery signal-esque formula, Northlane arrives as Australia's
newest metalcore export. 'Discoveries' is quite the debut; containing some interesting ideas
and enough variation to keep it delving into repetitive metalcore we've all witnessed in the

Underoath Lost In The Sound Of Separation
On this record Underoath consoliadate the raw, southern feel hinted at on Define the Great Line. Some great riffs are on here (the one in the middle of Anyone can dig a hole.. really just hits you) and Underoath use feedback quite well, not in an annoying way. Chamberlins screams are given more priority on here, and they sound more desperate than ever. great record.

Leveler is August Burns Red trading song writing contemptency for an improvement in technical ability. Sure, the solos, breakdowns, and Luhrs ever improving scream are more monstrous and better on this album, but it doesn't manage to quench most critics desire for a more innovative approach. Leveler is the sound of August Burns Red failing to recognise the room for innovation, and rather, stepping up instrumental prowess.

Bloc Party hit the mark in delivering some of the best indie-pop singles of the decade. However, after listening to the full record a few times its hard to ignore the faults it so promotes (for example its long length). Netherless, it still remains an interesting release, where Bring Me the Horizon plays around with featuring guest vocalists (Lights and Josh Franceschi), production gimmicks, slowing down the pace all while creating a sound they can call theirs. Hannah Reid has explained their sound as verging towards singer-songwriter territory, and it definitely feels that way; I feel as if Reid is carrying the other two, as their parts never grab attention as a full band would. That being said, there is a definite aim for texture and aesthetic in terms of guitar lines and piano chords; and they do succeed in this realm. Solid debut.

Sigur Ros ( )
Perhaps the problem for me is that I don't have any words to hang my emotions off, as with other albums. ( ) is brilliant at times, and i can see where the acclaim comes from, yet it's one of those albums I've never been able to connect on a deeper level. For me, the extended ( ) metaphor, in which the listener fills in their own emotion and imagery, doesn't work as what I assumed it would, and perhaps that's the biggest draw of this album for other people. To me it sounds boringly ethereal, and as a whole acts as film-music - to be played in the background for more striking moments.
Sleeping With Sirens With Ears to See and Eyes to Hear
save for the awkward breakdowns and god-awful lyrics, this is a really catchy and interesting album. At some points I think Sleeping with Sirens are trying to please too many fans - the breakdowns, the auto-tune that makes an appearance and the almost cliche acoustic ballad. If I'm James Dean... is defiantly worth the listen, however the other songs are everything you'd expect of a modern post-harcore band.

Brand New Daisy
Well, it certainly is interesting. To me a mark of a good album is one thats memorable, different, and can be discussed at quite a length (heck look at all the sound-offs for this!). But see, even that statement can be debatable in regards to Daisy, where some songs are repetitive and dull (hardly memorable) and it does sound like a rip-off of a Nirvana song (hardly different). But Daisy simultaneously Is good and bad. Its like Brand New has turned around said fuck expectations and written whatever they felt like, which is this. On another note, I feel this album is Brand New stretching their musical limits, but I somehow get the feeling theyre running out of ideas, and thrown this together. In my opinion, Ive never really been a fan of grunge or abrasive/rough textures (the muddy lyrics and titles, the fuzzy bass and weak guitar tones) and by no means is this a bad album, but it just doesnt work for me.
Bring Me The Horizon Count Your Blessings
Bryson Tiller Anniversary
Such a frustrating record - it's obvious that the guy can clearly sing, yet the subject matter is mindlessly derivative and the production is really papery and cluttered, like a collection of washed out samples they haven't bothered to clear.
Bullet For My Valentine Bullet For My Valentine EP
Choker Peak
This is too scattered and inconsistent to rate but the dude has mad talent
Circle Takes the Square As the Roots Undo
Can never really recapture that point in which it finally clicked. It's still abrasive and raucous, but I can see every valley, every jarring riff, that once again, it's become as redundant as when I first listened to it. So then, what's the point? Yes rewarding, but all the same; might as well listen to something immediately like-able then spend weeks getting through torturous repeated listens.
City and Colour Bring Me Your Love
dallas goes a little too folk-sy and cutesy with this record, with the excellent songwriting of songs such as 'what makes a man' and 'body in a box' being brushed aside for the variety and feel of the record. the album genrally coasts along, through rollicking rhythms and folk-sy instrumentation (such as a harmonica and tambourines), however, this in my opinion buries dallas' nack for his creative songwiritng skills. thankfully, he has since realeased the 'myspace transmissions' which focuses more upon the actual songs themselves, and IS what this should have been, in a shorter length.
Deafheaven New Bermuda
Cheesy solos, riffs rehashed from a Metallica b-side, and somewhere in the middle an obvious aching loss of the vivacity that made Sunbather incredible. By drawing back upon the tropes of the genre, Deafheaven find themselves in a somewhat precarious position. It's as if they've climbed Everest and are now delivering a second hand re-telling to everyone. It's just not the same.
Death Cab for Cutie Narrow Stairs
Drake Thank Me Later

Emarosa This Is Your Way Out

Foals Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost - Part 1
Yannis just needs to start rocking Bono's shades and Foals' transformation into U2 will be complete. Also this is nothing like Antidotes.
Grimes Miss Anthropocene
If you look past the sci-fi vibes and the post-apocalyptic sonics you can almost hear a greenday song just dying to be heard

Lido Everything
Miguel War and Leisure
Muse Showbiz
Parkway Drive Deep Blue
Being a parkway fan, i found this album quite underwhelming. Whilst Unrest, Karma and Levianthan I are standout tracks, the rest of the albums is dare i say it; boring. I find myself going back and listening to previous parkway albums when i start listening to this.
Polica United Crushers
Just doesn't hold attention enough. The skewed synths in Lately are awesome but, and Lose You is a decent song.

Bullet For My Valentine Scream Aim Fire
Circa Survive On Letting Go
On Letting Go really out-does Juturna here in everything that is sterile and dry; everything is too safe and drenched in a white that you know from hospital waiting rooms. Agonizingly slow (take the opening lead from the albums best song 'The Difference Between...' ) and too overtly palatable, On Letting Go fails do anything remarkable or note-worthy.
Defeater Abandoned
Dua Lipa Dua Lipa
dvsn Sept. 5th
Earl Sweatshirt Doris
FKA Twigs Magdalene
From First to Last Dear Diary, My Teen Angst Has a Body Count
From First to Last Heroine
Grimes Art Angels
A lot of these songs are built around (to my ear) overly trite country or guitar licks, while Boucher throws sample after sample at it to make it interesting. There's too many samples clashing with each other and it makes for really scrambled pop music. It's exhausting to listen to, and a step backwards for her as a producer.

Jonny Craig Find What You Love And Let It Kill You

Lana Del Rey Ultraviolence
And lo, women worldwide cringe even harder. I'd feel more at ease if it wasn't for how good the songwriting on Born to Die was; this is probably the most disappointed I've been with an album for a long time. It's not just within the music itself, while the beats are more lifeless and lazily put together in a haze of reverb, but with Lana's character. I could indulge in the character of the debut because I submitted to an idea that there was a smarter, more intelligent women behind it, coyly playing up to male fantasies with a sense of intrigue. But here the character is revealed to be more vacuous, more air-headed than it's predecessor. It's the lyrics that frustrate the most - "he hit me and it felt like a kiss" - yeah, you're really not all that bright are you Lana .
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis The Heist
I really had to stop listening when he started victimizing himself for being white. I mean Thrift Shop and Make the Money are okay, but Same Love's awful nursery-rhyme like piano is enough to sabotage its good message into ridicule and the rest of the songs seem to follow along Macklemore in his crusade to be the voice of change. Delivering intellectual proverbs in a half-assed cocky swagger really isn't appealing.
Paramore Paramore
There is no bad music. Only lazy music. Damn 50 characters.
Protest the Hero Fortress
Sure, Bloodmeat's awesome, but Fortress doesn't expand on anything that was displayed on Kezia. The novelty has worn off, and here we have simply a basic continuation of the sound constructed on Kezia, with very little variation. The riffs grow old after a few tracks, and the samples a laughable attempt to keep it interesting. A poor mans Between the Buried and Me? Yep, you said it.
Slipknot Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses
The Getaway Plan Requiem
This would be a triumphant return for The Getaway Plan, had the music held up to the amount of self-produced hype the band induced the album with. Sadly, it falls on its face, with the album being a more sedated, watered-down version of Other Voices, Other Rooms. Lyrically abstract, Musically lackluster, 'Requiem' fails to get out of the blocks in any sort of poignancy or memorability. Avoid.
