This album seems like a fairly accurate summation of Cymande's varied career. They are one of the great forgotten funk/soul bands of the seventies, and put out only three full-length studio albums (to my knowledge) before disbanding. This two-disc set contains all three of those albums, as well as a few unreleased tracks. Disc 1 is more enjoyable for me than the Disc 2. This disc features their greatest tracks: "Dove", "Bra", "The Message", and "Crawshay". But the real winner of this entire 32-song set is track 1 of Disc 2, "Bird". This one simply soars. But it's an uneven album as a whole, and it's apparent by the end of the second disc that the band's nine members were itching to go their separate ways. |
