Coheed and Cambria Neverender
Excellent perfomances by the band of their entire discography added to by the live atmopshere and audience participation. A fantastic overview of the band's Amory Wars saga.

Rage Against The Machine Rage Against the Machine
With this release Rage Against The Machine produced a seminal album which showed all the pretenders exactly how to do rap-metal well. emotional, politically charged, innovative and most importantly of all...entertaining.
Morello's hip/hop music influenced riffs, Commerfords groovy basslines and De La Rocha's intelligent, thought provoking lyrics all combine to make an album which appeals to rap and metal fans alike.
There are no standout tracks, the whole album is unmissable.

The stories are always the same and the excuses even more familiar. Another generation of slaves and masters coughed up and reswallowed. Another stagnant continuum of the status quo. Increments of time are the barriers of this isolation. Over these walls there isn''t a life worth pursuing.

Some of the best gutturals in existence + fast yet catchy riffs + pounding drums + bleak lyrics = One of the top 5 grind albums ever.

Raekwon Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... Pt II
A more than worthy succesor to it's predecessor, Cuban Linx II boasts fantastic beats and production by J Dilla, RZA and Dr Dre, excellent lyrics and revitalised performances by Rae and the rest of the Wu. All of which ensure that the album packs a punch and does not tire over its 24 track course and contains enough hooks to last a fisherman a lifetime.
SikTh The Trees Are Dead & Dried Out...
Sleep Sleep's Holy Mountain
OK I only bought this album recently, but even in 1992 it would have been dated. Don't get me wrong, it's highly enjoyable, and it's easy to see how these guys morphed into Om and High on Fire, both awesome bands. But Holy Mountain sounds very much like a training run and something that Black Sabbath could have easily written somewhere around 1976, so it doesn't really contribute to the evolution of music.

Wastelands is a definite step up from the band's previous album. The overall style has moved from deathcore/grind to a more melodic death metal style and also features a number of progressive elements. Vocals are great with a mix of high screams and low growls.
Good songwriting with catchy riffs. Rhythm section backs the guitars and vocals up well. The guitarist's technical skills are displayed throughout with solos and intereludes, which are tastefully placed.
Overall an excellent improvement and a great foundation to build from.

Eminem Relapse
Eminem's comeback 'Relapse' shows that he is clearly undecided in the direction he wants to take. Split between jokey/satirical tracks such as "We Made You"and "3AM" and more serious attempts such as "Beautiful" and "Underground". The album is not helped by Eminem's new accented delivery which gets grating after the first couple of songs, however when he does return to his usual delivery the songs take an upturn and these tracks prove to be the strongest on the album. The addition of autontuned sections to a number of songs is also questionable. The album definitely has some great songs but suffers from filler and questionable delivery. Relapse is apparently the first of two albums being released this year with the section due towards the end of 2009. Here's hoping Relapse 2 delivers more consistently.

American Idiot was a solid effort. But this is just a rehash of those ideas, building on the popularity of the album, yet failing to capture the same feeling and just ends up as nothing more than a pretentious and over-long attempt at writing an American Idiot 2.

Killswitch Engage Killswitch Engage (2009)
With their second self-titled release, Killswitch Engage never really gave themselves a chance. The band uses the same songwriting formula as on their past two releases. In fact a number of songs on here contain parts which sound like they are taken from songs on The End Of Heartache and As Daylight Dies. The band has made no real progression. There are some highlights with a number of fun/catchy riffs and the occassional solo, but the majority of songs are all very similar (e.g. "Starting Over" and "Light In A Darkened World") and Howard Jones' lyrics have become even cheesier and generic. Ultimately, Killswitch Engage is the product of a band stagnating due to their own lack of creativity and risk taking.
