Mastodon The Hunter
Ugh, i'm so freakin' disappointed. Everything's just so boring on this. The only songs I really like are Black Tongue, Curl of the Burll, Blasteroid, Stargasm, Octopus Has No Friends, All the Heavy Lifting, The Hunter, Dry Bone Valley, Thickening, Creature Lives, Spectrelight, Bedazzled Fingernails, The Sparrow. We'll see if my opinion changes after a few more listens but I just feel immensely disappointed right now. Fuck.r

Muse The Resistance
C'mon guys, this is not terrible. Yes, it's not the Muse of old and yes, they are wearing their influences on their sleeves (Queen, U2) but they are not directly ripping them off. With The Resistance, Muse have constructed a meticulously detailed album with plenty of diversity. The opening track is straight up Muse, while tracks like Guiding Light and Undisclosed desires definitely have a U2 vibe (the latter also featuring a hip-hop beat and slap bass). MK Ultra and Unnatural Selecion hark back to Absolution/OoS era Muse and are highlights of the album. The only real let down here are the Exogenises tracks, which really just fizzle out and don't reach a satisfying climax, their worst album closer yet.

Saosin In Search Of Solid Ground
Ok, while this is definitely regressive instrumentally, Cove's vocals and lyrics have improved. His vocal melodies are powerfully unique, and it seems he has finally stepped out of Anthony's shadow. Vocally, the only thing i found dissapointing were his screams on the opening track. The EP version of 'Keeping Secrets' featured fantastic screaming, similar to Spencer Chamberlain of Underoath, while here they sound forced and overproduced. It's a shame that the songs on The Grey EP were 'dumbed down' for this, as they were excellent. It also should be noted that the drumming is still some of the best in the genre. To sum things up, the technical guitar lines found on previous releases are almost non-existent here, but Saosin still offer a solid punk/post-hardcore experience.

Just not good enough Steve, sorry. The "metal" parts sound like a watered down Meshuggah and don't push any boundaries, the industrial parts just plain suck and the poppy parts aren't catchy. The best parts of the album are the acoustic or psychadelic sections. The lyrics are fairly average but insrumentally it's solid, especially the rhythm section (great drums). Just download Time Flies and I drive the Hearse.
