always a very strong sense of structural unity and cohesiveness. It implied that David
Longstreth was, first and foremost, a gifted and consistent songwriter. Swing Lo Magellan is
essentially what's underneath all of that left-field weirdness. A collection of
straightforward pop and folk tunes that illustrate Longstreth's proficiency as a songwriter
and his ear for infectious melody and harmony. The result is far more wonderful than the sum
of its parts. More unassuming than their back-catalog, but simultaneously stronger and more
listenable than all of them combined, and one of the best albums of 2012 so far. |

Lax, peaceful, and uplifting, Burst Apart is easily the hardest album to really pin down all year. One could easily mistake its effortlessness for laziness. But those who are content with just sitting back and feeling out all the little subtleties and melodies will find an immensely, consistently rewarding album, just like Hospice. Not a disappointment in the slightest. |

I am pleasantly surprised with this album.
I expected an incredibly brutal display of black metal with death metal influences. I had absolutely no idea that this was Marduk's most black metal release. | I just got this album recently and it is one of the better albums I have heard all year. It is heavy, fast, and melodic all at the same time. These guys know how to write a perfect riff and the drumming is fast as hell. The vocals are not everybodies cup of tea but I like them quite a bit. The one thing I do not like about the album is the bass is hardly noticable, and there is little to no variation... nevertheless splendid album. Will definitely pick up Miasma. |

| I'm not familiar with their older stuff, but Digital Veil is a lot of fun. Most 'technical metalcore whatcha-ma-callit' strikes me as superfluous and gimmicky, and yes, Digital Veil can sometimes stumble and meander into this like a bad habit, but for the most part, the songs feel intentful, and the band seems to be on the verge of something quite unique and separate from their gimmicky peers. There aren't a lot of "memorable" moments, but the entire thing is generally a pleasure to listen to. The band is melodic, tight, and the classical influences are more than a gimmick, and are actually the bands strongest element. In general an impressive, promising album, if a little unfulfilling. There are parts that justify more than a 3.5, but serious flaws hinder it. |
