Not really sure how to describe this album other than crushing. Small changes in time flow very well. Architect might be the most pissed off band to exist.

Cattle Decapitation The Harvest Floor
Probably the most cohesive album by Cattle Decapitation. The time-signatures while still all over the place, feel like they come "naturally," with the help of some great transitions. The chaos of Cattle Decapitation is still quite apparent on this album, but there is a lot more focus on atmosphere this time around and even some slower parts and some patterns that are a bit easier to understand, while using the chaos of their old albums as transitions and the like.
Vocally, Travis Ryan outdoes himself, or perhaps...shows a lot of potential on this album, even if a good portion of it are mids. The bass is very easy to hear and it has a crushing sound, while the guitar is much easier to hear this time through and shows quite a bit of technicality. Drums are relentless, but involve great fills and transitions as opposed to the jumpy style of Karma.Bloody.Karma.

Not a far stretch from the sound the west coast seems to be advancing on as far as black metal goes. Atmospheric and comparisons can probably be drawn to WiTTR; which aren't exactly unfitting, though the music is a bit thicker and perhaps raw. Daedalus and Exit: Denied show great potential and expansion for this band.

Upon my first listen I thought that this recording wasn't as great as their predecessor Facing The Thousand. Upon an entire listen and even another, this CD grew on me and in a few ways...lived up to and outshined Facing The Thousand.
There are a lot more up-tempo thrash like songs, Firehaven being a prime example and even features vocals from Chuck Billy (Testament) that are awesome.
The Donor also shows more death metal elements, while Sand and Snow show the melodic nature Light This City is known for.
Originally I would have given it a 3-3.5, but now I think it's safe to say that it's a varied album, and an improved one.

The best thing this band has put out, I think. Darker, thick atmosphere, and interesting echoed vocals. First track is definitely the best. As an EP, kind of hard to rate it much higher than this and this is probably still generous.

Didn't care for the band before this album - too much tasteless tapping and sweeping, but this is way more straight ahead. The tremolo riffs are great and the production is great for this kind of sound. Sucks it's an EP, because this would be great material for an album.

Bit more aggressive and in vein of hidden hands in terms of aggression. Generally nothing new explored for the most part with some exceptions...riffs are what you'd expect from Darkest Hour, but it's constructed very well and John Henry sounds a lot better...as does Darkest Hour as a unit. Solid album probably between 3.5-4. Lonestar does a good job throwing in some nice melodies that create unique tones for the songs when they appear as well. Drums are for the most part variations of the skank beat the whole way through, but it works well.

Lacks something. The guitars feel somewhat thin. The heavy parts are heavy, and the driving parts are great...but it's hard to feel like they are fused very well or coherently. While the riffing is tasteful and technical, it's hard to not feel like they're recycled due to Gorod's tendency to shred over sometimes simple rhythmic groove patterns.
Not as captivating as their last effort, but certainly a solid one. Some songs themselves are excellent and some of their best, otherwise...It's a solid album, perhaps somewhat underwhelming considering how great their previous releases were. |
